The Justice Department has charged former Oath Keepers member Ray Epps for his participation in the Jan. 6 riot. Epps became a target of conspiracy theories spread by many Republicans who sought to accuse him of being an undercover federal agent that urged Trump supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol.

Epps was charged on Monday with a single misdemeanor count of disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted area via a criminal information, which is often an indication a defendant is prepared to plead guilty.

Epps had long denied being an informant or federal agent, including in testimony before the Jan. 6 House select committee. He has since filed a defamation suit against Fox News and former host Tucker Carlson for repeated segments spreading the conspiracy theory he was acting undercover, which he has said resulted in threats and harassment that upended his life.

Conservatives are reacting in outrage over the apparent ‘slap on the wrist’ Epps is getting.

Prominent conservative Twitter user Julie Kelly shared a copy of the indictment and wrote, “This lame single charge tells us everything we need to know about Ray Epps. No obstruction felony? No civil disorder charge? Not even a trespassing on restricted grounds misdemeanor?”

“Can’t even tell you the last time I saw an “information” (misdemeanor version of indictment) for a J6er on a sole count. Not sure it exists but will check.”

Another Twitter user shared multiple video clips showing Epps repeatedly urging people to go to the Capitol as soon as Trump finished speaking.

“Here’s your reminder of what Ray Epps did on January 6th. Ray Epps ACTIVELY encouraged people to go to the Capitol. Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years and wasn’t present at the Capitol that day,” the person wrote.

Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk also shared a copy of the indictment and wrote, “Not suspicious at all! Nearly 3 years after J6, Ray Epps is finally charged … with “disorderly conduct.”

“That’s right. The man who yelled for people to storm the Capitol, who was video taped mulitple times actually trying to incite a riot, somehow avoids seditious conspiracy with no terrorism enhancement while people who never entered the Capitol are rotting away in a DC jail. Everything is on the level folks.”

Former gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake of Arizona also responded, tweeting, “One misdemeanor charge for the man caught on camera telling people “We need to go into the Capital.” The man who texted his nephew, “I Also Orchestrated It.” This isn’t normal. There’s so much more to this story than they’re telling us.”

“Don’t be fooled by the token single charge of a misdemeanor on Ray Epps. They wont elevate his charges to terrorism as they did with everyone else who did FAR LESS. He won’t see a day in prison. This is a farce,” declared another conservative Twitter user, Spitfire.

Conservative comedian Tim Young wrote, “**BREAKING** Ray Epps, one of the main instigators on January 6, was charged with a misdemeanor today… Unlike other people on that day, he won’t spend years in jail… he’ll most likely cut a deal and pay a small fine. Still not going to convince anyone that he’s not a fed.”

“Two and a half years late Ray Epps is charged with “disorderly conduct.” No “seditious conspiracy.” No “terrorist enhancement.” I wonder why? I think you know,” tweeted Sebastian Gorka.
