The post noted that Peterson’s health had taken a turn for the worse once her husband, Gus, passed away.
In a Facebook post, the family shared the following announcement:
Dear Fans, Friends, and Family, It is with great sorrow that we report that our dear Aunt Maggie died yesterday afternoon (Sunday, May 15). She passed peacefully in her sleep with her family present.
Maggie’s health took a turn for the worse after the death of her husband Gus and we are relieved that we were able to move her home to be close to family for her last days. We will be planning a private service for Maggie in the next few weeks. Although this fundraiser will no longer be accepting donations, we will keep it open for a few more weeks in order to communicate with this community.
Maggie wanted this community to know how much you meant to her over the past three years. Despite being in Las Vegas and away from her family, your love and devotion helped her to not feel alone. She made many mentions to us about how she couldn’t believe how generous you all were. You truly made a positive impact on her life and helped her during some very difficult times.
Finally, Maggie’s family would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your caring and generosity was inspiring and we could not of done any of this without you. We hope that during this difficult time you can find solace in knowing how important you were for making the end of Maggie’s life much better.
Thank you and God bless.
The lovely and talented Maggie Peterson has passed away at the age of 81. Best-remembered (and so very loved) as Charlene Darling, she leaves a wonderful legacy of laughter. My favorite kind of legacy! (It’s like she was born to play the role of Charlene!) pic.twitter.com/ICl0KILXkL

Below is a scene from the Andy Griffith Show, where Peterson played Charlene Darling:
On April 24, the family had posted a statement on Facebook, announcing that Peterson’s health was declining, and said she had “no savings or assets.”
Dear Friends and Fans, We wanted to give you an update on Maggie’s condition and give you some exciting new news.
Maggie’s deteriorating emotional and physical health makes it necessary that she be moved to a faculty that offers more nursing care. Maggie is unable to walk and is now confined to a wheelchair or bed, substantially increasing her care needs. After discussions with Maggie and her family, we have decided to move back home to Colorado where she will be closer to her family. We will be making the move in May. The facility we have selected is very nice and can provide the level of care she needs. Importantly, her stay at this home will become Medicaid eligible for Maggie after 24 months. Currently, Maggie meets the financial requirements for Medicaid. She has no savings or assets so this is an ideal long-term solution for Maggie. Although the move is daunting, Maggie is excited to be heading home. She is blessed to have individuals like you and her loving family who continue to supplement her increasing medical costs.
Your devotion to Maggie over the years has meant so much to her and she thanks you from the bottom of her heart. Maggie has had emotional and life changing events in the last 5 years, and we are committed to continuing to help Maggie with her life’s challenges and circumstances. It would have been difficult to cover Maggie’s expenses without your help. She truly appreciates the generous love and support you have given to her these last two years. Thank you for generous and ongoing support!
