Beatrix Potter, an author who is known for children’s stories like “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and died in 1943, is being accused of taking her stories from African slave tales.
Dr. Emily Zobel Marshall, a lecturer at Leeds Beckett University and an expert in Postcolonial theory recently made waves in the literary world after she alleged that Potter’s beloved children tales are more likely than not taken from “Brer Rabbit,” in stories that originally date back to pre-colonial Africa.
“Her tales owe a debt to the Brer Rabbit stories told by enslaved Africans working on American plantations that needs to be fully acknowledged,” Marshall wrote in an article published May 19.
Marshall published her essay on The Conversation website, and titled it, “Beatrix Potter’s famous tales are rooted in stories told by enslaved Africans – but she was very quiet about their origins.”
Basing her “expert opinion” on a number of assumptions, Marshall wrote:
It is popularly held that Potter conceived of her tales in 1893, while writing to the sickly son of her friend and former governess, Annie Moore. In these letters she wrote and illustrated stories featuring her pet rabbit, Peter Piper.
As a scholar of folktales and postcolonial literature, however, I spend a lot of time tracing the roots of stories and examining the impact of colonial legacies on them. While rereading another collection of children’s stories featuring the “trickster hero” Brer Rabbit – for my own book on how these folktales were introduced to North America by enslaved Africans – it became clear to me that the similarities between Beatrix Potter’s tales and the Brer Rabbit stories demand further consideration.
The tales of Brer Rabbit can be traced back to pre-colonial Africa, from where they were transported to the plantations of America by enslaved people. The stories were first adapted for a white audience in the late 19th century by the American journalist and folklorist Joel Chandler Harris.
Throughout her lengthy essay, Marshall repeatedly drew parallels between the Brer Rabbit stories and Peter Rabbit, and claimed, “The steps Potter took to steer readers away from her sources are problematic. She appears to have been keen to claim the stories as her own, while ensuring that readers didn’t make the connection between Peter Rabbit and the stories narrated by Uncle Remus.”
“Through Potter’s silence concerning her sources, the African American tales that helped create her stories are passed over without acknowledgement or celebration,” Marshall claimed.
Marshall’s Twitter account is locked up, with only “approved followers” allowed to view her tweets.
“Potter’s use of the Brer Rabbit stories as the basis of her tales is not the main issue here … However, the steps Potter took to steer readers away from her sources are problematic.”https://t.co/FMRHSsVWQJ

MORE LIES, DIVISION AND HATE!
IT’S INTERESTING HOW THESE PEOPLE WANT EVERYONE TO BELIEVE THAT EVERYTHING EVER ACCOMPLISHED IN AMERICA WAS DONE ON THE BACKS OF BLACKS! BLACKS! A COMMUNITY OF FAILURE! A CULTURE OF IGNORANCE AND VIOLENCE!
DESPITE THE GENUINE POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS OF A TINY PERCENTAGE OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY, THE BLACK CONTRIBUTION TO AMERICA IS A NET NEGATIVE!
I loved the Beatrix Potter movie with Renee Zellweger. I’m sure she did a lot of research on this talented author who wrote at such a young age.
These libs who push this crap just divide and separate. Smh
Leave the Beatrix! This is a bunch of bunny poop, somebody is always trying to play victim and wanting reparations. Now these dumb over educated stupid greedy f—-s are going after Betrix Potter. Wow the bunny world will never be the same.
If Brer Rabbit and Uncle Remus are so important why is Song of the South canceled. Disney canceled an entire ride and won’t release the movie in the US. I highly doubt Beatrice Potter stole her stories. Maybe she was inspired by them, but not stolen. You can look back in history and say that about anything. It happens all the time to this very day. If you watch the tv show ER you can see how Grays Anatomy got “inspired”. Several storylines were “borrowed” or “inspired” from ER. So many songs and pieces of music sound alike because the writers were what….INSPIRED!! I could go on and on. It’s really sad that these accusations get any attention. Just another attempt to cause problems. I hope Potters family fights back against these claims.
Oh, now they like censorship. Hypocrites.
