Today is June 18, and here are the stories I am watching.
1-U.S. prepares to send more troops to the Mideast. After Iran said it would exceed limits on its enriched-uranium stockpiles before the end of this month, the U.S. said it would send an additional 1,000 troops to the Mideast in response to “hostile behavior” by Tehran.
DML: It’s beginning to look like war.
2-Saudis to push for OPEC cuts, despite tanker attacks. Saudi Arabia is set to push for the oil group to cut output in the second half of the year, as signs of slowing global demand for crude outweigh threats of war and worries about supply disruptions in the Middle East.
DML: As I’ve been warning, it’s things like this that stifle an economy. Trump best tread smartly.
3-Facebook unveils new cryptocurrency. Libra, as it is called, has backing from big, corporate partners including Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and Uber. In the most ambitious effort so far to take blockchain payments mainstream, Facebook plans to make the service available on Messenger and WhatsApp as well as a stand-alone app.
DML: I wonder if conservatives are permitted to use the service?
4-Trump to kick off 2020 presidential run in Florida. President Trump’s chance of re-election significantly diminishes if he doesn’t repeat victory in Florida. But Democrats are also eager to carry the nation’s largest perennial battleground by seeking to galvanize the Hispanic vote.
DML: Haz que América sea grande otra vez
5-Fed policy makers debate rate cut. Federal Reserve officials meet today recognizing they may need to cut interest rates should the economic outlook darken. The question is whether that moment has arrived or if they need more information before deciding.
DML: Cut now!
DML Extra: A FOX News big wig who is outraged by the behavior at the network told me there are no more scheduled town halls, and that the emails bumper stickers was a huge hit with the FOX employees who are pro-Trump. My contact said to keep the pressure on. To help, go to DennisMichaelLynch.com/Fox and participate in the bumper sticker campaign as they start to hit FOX News this week!
