Today is July 1. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room. And don’t forget to download the free DML App from the Google Play or Apple App Store to remain connected to me throughout the day.
1.Kentucky Catholic church holds ‘Service of Apology to the LGBTQ+ Community’
FoxNews – A Catholic church in Kentucky held what it called a “Service of Atonement and Apology to the LGBTQ+ Community” on Thursday night – the final night of Pride Month.
Saint Paul Catholic Church in Lexington posted a copy of the program to its Facebook page saying the service was an apology to the community for “the Church’s lack of respect, compassion, and sensitivity and for unjust discrimination.”
DML: And this is why I no longer go to church. As a Catholic, I am so tired of the church going political and asking me for money. The decline in attendance at church is in a big part driven by this sort of crap. Keep politics out of God’s house.
2.Trial for US basketball star begins in Moscow-area court
(AP) — American basketball star Brittney Griner appeared in a Moscow-area court for trial Friday, about 4 1/2 months after she was arrested on cannabis possession charges at an airport while traveling to play for a Russian team.
Griner was arrested in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. Police said she was carrying vape canisters with cannabis oil. The Phoenix Mercury center and two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.
Fewer than 1% of defendants in Russian criminal cases are acquitted, and unlike in the U.S., acquittals can be overturned.
At a closed-door preliminary hearing Monday in the Moscow suburb of Khimki, Griner’s detention was extended for another six months, to Dec. 20.
DML: This is 100% political, and Biden will do nothing to get her freed.
3.Public schools in Texas would rename slavery as ‘involuntary relocation’
DailyMail – Public schools in Texas would describe slavery to second graders as ‘involuntary relocation’ under new social studies standards proposed to the state’s education board.
A group of nine educators submitted the idea to the State Board of Education as part of Texas’ efforts to develop new social studies curriculum, according to the Texas Tribune.
The once-a-decade process updates what children learn in the state’s nearly 8,900 public schools.
DML: Unreal, and this is why Texas is nowhere near as great as Florida. What’s next, renaming the White House to the Colorless House? Maybe in the curriculum they should teach kids that blacks sold blacks to America, and that it was the Republicans who wanted to end slavery but the Democrats wouldn’t have it.
4.Stock futures slip after the S&P 500’s worst first half since 1970
CNBC -U.S. stock futures slip Friday morning after the S&P 500 closed out its worst first-half performance in decades.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 130 points lower, or 0.4%. S&P 500 futures shed 0.4% and Nasdaq 100 futures fell 0.5%.
Thursday marked the end of the second quarter and the first half of the year. For the quarter, the S&P 500 fell more than 16% – its biggest one-quarter fall since March 2020. For the first half, the broader market index dropped 20.6% for its largest first-half decline since 1970. It also tumbled into bear market territory, down more than 21% from a record high set early January.
DML: Buckle in folks. There is no mitigating factor what will boost the markets, they are no winning events that will spark a rally. This is going to stay in play until Joe Biden is booted in 2024.
5. COVID cases on the rise in U.S.
A state by state analysis tells a troubling story. For example, a new wave of cases have taken shape in Louisiana. In Rhode Island, 224 new cases were reported Thursday. In Arkansas, coronavirus cases are on the rise again. On Wednesday, 1,332 cases were reported, according to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It’s the second consecutive daily increase over 1,000. Nearly all states are seeing an uptick in Covid cases.
It’s not just the U.S., across the pond in Britain the Covid cases shot up 30% last week. More than 1.7m people now have the virus in the UK.
An FDA panel spent hours Tuesday debating how and whether to update vaccines, Axios’ Adriel Bettelheim and Tina Reed report. Time is running short to develop a fall game plan, with existing vaccines losing effectiveness against new variants and more than half of Americans still without a booster dose.
DML: People are catching Covid for the second time, despite being vaccinated. People are also landing in the hospital, despite being vaccinated. You know what this means, right? It means the Democrats have a big election upcoming, and now that liberal outlets like Axios are reporting the ineffectiveness of the jab when it comes to battling new variants, the only way to keep people safe will be to use mail-in ballots. For the rest of us who want to focus on our health and well being rather than calculating ways to cheat our fellow citizens, we should focus on boosting the immune system to protect against what’s here and what’s coming.
MY PARTING WORDS: For the past few days we’ve been running a huge BOGO at DMLcbd.com, every item was being sold as a buy one get one free. The sale was scheduled to end last night at midnight EST. But I guess people on the west coast didn’t get the memo, they thought is was PST. We are an east coast company, so when it’s midnight here it’s only 9pm on the west. People continued to go to the BOGO page after 12am on the east coast. We will honor those west coast sales, but the only way to do it correctly is to extend the BOGO sale for the entire day. Thus, the BOGO sales continues for July 1. The BOGO will end this evening at midnight, PACIFIC STANDARD TIME. Any order received today is a BOGO, and you will also receive the 20% OFF COUPON for a future order. The coupon will be inserted in your box. Boost the immune system, protect yourself! Diminish the aches and pains in joints and muscles, curb the anxiety and improve sleep. If you missed the BOGO yesterday, this is your lucky day. But make no mistake, it ends today. DMLcbd.com/bogo
