1 – State Dept. officials sound alarm over disturbing reports about Afghan men entering United States
Fox News reports: U.S. officials are looking into reports that in the frantic evacuation of desperate Afghans from Kabul, older men were admitted together with young girls they claimed as “brides” or otherwise sexually abused.
U.S. officials at intake centers in the United Arab Emirates and in Wisconsin have identified numerous incidents in which Afghan girls have been presented to authorities as the “wives” of much older men. While child marriage is not uncommon in Afghanistan, the U.S. has strict policies against human trafficking that include prosecutions for offenders and sanctions for countries that don’t crack down on it.
One internal document seen by The Associated Press says the State Department has sought “urgent guidance” from other agencies after purported child brides were brought to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Another document, described to the AP by officials familiar with it, says Afghan girls at a transit site in Abu Dhabi have alleged they have been raped by older men they were forced to marry in order to escape Afghanistan.
An Aug. 27 situation report sent to all U.S. embassies and consulates abroad as well as military command centers in Florida points to potential issues involving young girls and older men, some of whom claim to have more than one wife at Fort McCoy, a sprawling 60,000-acre (243-square-kilometer) Army base in Wisconsin. Relevant portions of the document, titled “Afghanistan Task Force SitRep No. 63,” were obtained by the AP.
“Intake staff at Fort McCoy reported multiple cases of minor females who presented as ‘married’ to adult Afghan men, as well as polygamous families,” the document says. “Department of State has requested urgent guidance.”

2 – Texas judge hands narrow win to abortion providers fighting new 6-week ban
The Hill reports: A Texas state judge on Friday temporarily blocked an anti-abortion group from enforcing Texas’s new 6-week abortion ban against Planned Parenthood, handing a narrow legal victory to abortion rights advocates.
The order from Judge Maya Guerra Gamble halts the anti-abortion group Texas Right to Life and its associates from suing abortion providers and workers at Planned Parenthood clinics under Texas’s highly restrictive new abortion law, S.B. 8.
“The Court finds that S.B. 8 creates a probable, irreparable, and imminent injury in the interim for which plaintiffs and their physicians, staff and patients throughout Texas have no adequate remedy at law if plaintiffs, their physicians, and staff are subjected to private enforcement lawsuits against them under S.B. 8,” Gamble wrote.
The ruling applies only to the parties in the lawsuit and does not invalidate the new law, which prohibits abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can occur as early as six weeks after a woman becomes pregnant.
Planned Parenthood has gone on the attack, vowing to fight the Texas abortion bill.

Planned Parenthood is also begging for donations to help women go out of state to get abortions.
Abortion funds help you pay for an abortion when you can’t afford one. Some also help by connecting you to resources like a hotel room or a driver if you need to travel for your abortion.

3 – Harvard Groups: Atheist Head ‘Chaplain’ Will Have ‘No Influence’ on Religious Life
Breitbart reports: Two faith-based organizations associated with Harvard University have claimed the New York Times story about the unanimous election of an atheist humanist as head “chaplain” at the school was mischaracterized since the role is “purely administrative” and has “no influence.”
The Harvard Catholic Center and the school’s Christian Alumni Society defended the decision of more than 40 chaplains to elect atheist Greg Epstein, author of Good Without God, to be its new president of the chaplains’ organization.
“There is a rising group of people who no longer identify with any religious tradition but still experience a real need for conversation and support around what it means to be a good human and live an ethical life,” Epstein told the New York Times, where he was presented as having arisen to the role largely because university students have grown increasingly secular.
“We don’t look to a god for answers,” he said. “We are each other’s answers.”
I’m obliged and honored to share personal news: I’ve been elected president of my @HarvardChaplain colleagues, and the brilliant @emmabgo wrote about it for the @nytimes. Will add a 🧵here, later today.
