1 – POWER GRAB: Pelosi pledges Roe v. Wade bill after Supreme Court allows Texas abortion law to go into effect
Fox News reports: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Thursday pledged to bring a bill codifying the Supreme Court abortion decision Roe v. Wade to the House floor in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to allow a Texas abortion law to go into effect.
“When we go back to Washington, we will be putting Roe v. Wade codification on the floor of the House, to make sure that women everywhere have access to the reproductive health that they need,” Pelosi said in a news conference.

The Texas law, signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in May, prohibits abortions once medical professionals can detect cardiac activity, usually around six weeks and before many women know they’re pregnant.
The court voted 5-4 to deny an emergency appeal from abortion providers and others to sideline the law while appeals are made, allowing the law to go into effect Wednesday. The judges also suggested that their order likely isn’t the last word on whether the law can stand.
Every woman has the constitutional right to basic health care. SB8 is the most extreme, dangerous abortion ban in half a century & its purpose is to destroy Roe v. Wade, and even refuses to make exceptions for cases of rape and incest. This ban necessitates codifying Roe v. Wade.

2 – General Motors to temporarily halt production of nearly all US plants due to pandemic-related chip shortage overseas
USA Today reports: DETROIT – General Motors will idle nearly all its assembly plants in North America starting Monday as the COVID-19 pandemic affects production of semiconductor chips overseas.
GM said its Arlington Assembly in Texas, where it makes its highly profitable full-size SUVs, will run regular production next week, along with Flint Assembly in Michigan, where it makes its heavy-duty pickups, Bowling Green Assembly in Kentucky, where it makes its Corvette, and a portion of Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, where it will make some Chevrolet Camaro and Cadillac Blackwing cars.
But all other assembly plants in North America will idle starting Monday.
“All the announcements we made today are related to the chips shortage, the only plant down that’s not related to that, is Orion Assembly,” said GM spokesman Dan Flores, referring to that plant’s shutdown over Chevy Bolt recall issues.
The industry already has been experiencing a global shortage of the chips, used in a variety of car parts, since early this year. The chips are also used in small electronics and as more workers and children stayed home from work and school last year during the pandemic, demand for personal electronics, such as laptops, rose and created a shortage of chips.

3 – Oregon superintendent is FIRED by school board for not ignoring governor’s statewide mask mandate, and tearfully tells meeting that he is ‘tired of disappointing my colleagues’
The Daily Mail reports: A superintendent in rural Oregon was fired by his school board at an emotional meeting on Monday, amid backlash because he upheld Governor Kate Brown’s statewide mask mandate.
The Adrian School Board held a special closed-door meeting, which ended in the termination of superintendent Kevin Purnell.
No reason was given for his termination, but both supporters and critics said that his stance on following the statewide directive had put him at odds with the board, the Oregonian reports.
The former superintendent was described by community members as a ‘rule follower’ who would enforce the statewide mask mandates despite his personal opposition to them. But some community members had hoped that the local administration would fight against the mask mandates. The session lasted less than half an hour and ended with a 4-1 vote to fire Purnell. He held his position for three years and worked for the district for 14 years.
