Senators Ron Johnson (WI) and James Lankford (Okla.) introduced an amendment Wednesday to end Columbus Day’s inclusion as a federal holiday and replace it with a new holiday – Juneteenth. The two senators shocked conservatives with the proposition, which would be tacked on to a bill introduced by another senator: John Cornyn (R-Texas). Cornyn’s bill would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
Senators Ron Johnson and Lankford think we must give up Columbus Day as a national holiday if we’re to have Juneteenth because of……lost economic output
A literal parody of a GOP obsessed GDP at the expense of everything else

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union Gen. Gordon Granger informed enslaved African-Americans in Texas of their freedom. “General Granger’s announcement put into effect the Emancipation Proclamation,” the New York Times explains, “which had been issued more than two and a half years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.” It has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s.
In our Thursday poll, we asked: “Do you support the bill Republican senators have introduced about Columbus Day?” A whopping 94% of respondents said, “No, I do not support it!” See the results below.
