1 – New York City mayor to visit border, seeks emergency aid for influx of asylum-seekers
ABC News reports: After New York City received over 3,100 asylum-seekers in the last week, including a record number 835 last Thursday, Mayor Eric Adams called on the state to provide more resources to deal with the ongoing issue.
Adams is scheduled to visit El Paso, Texas, on Saturday, his office announced Friday evening. Further details about the trip would be revealed later, according to the mayor’s office.
The mayor said in a statement the city is “at the breaking point,” and may not be able to handle more people coming.
“The absence of sorely needed federal immigration reform should not mean that this humanitarian crisis falls only on the shoulders of cities,” he said. Since the spring, New York City has accepted 40,000 asylum-seekers, and opened 74 emergency shelters and four humanitarian relief centers.
We’re now seeing more asylum seekers arrive than ever before. Last week we averaged over 400 people per day, with 835 asylum seekers arriving on one single day alone. This is pushing New York City to the brink.

2 – Kristi Noem says Biden admin. blocked July 4 Mt. Rushmore fireworks for third straight year
Fox News reports:South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem said Thursday the Biden administration has blocked the state from hosting July 4th fireworks at Mt. Rushmore for a third straight year.
“The best way to celebrate America’s Birthday is with fireworks at Mount Rushmore,” Noem tweeted. “Today, the Biden Administration rejected them. Again.”
2023 marks the third straight year that Noem’s application to host Independence Day fireworks at Mt. Rushmore has been rejected by the National Park Service.

“Fireworks continue to be viewed by multiple Tribes as an adverse effect on the traditional cultural landscape,” the rejection letter reads.

3 – Judge rejects Trump’s motion to dismiss E. Jean Carroll sexual assault lawsuit
The Hill reports: A federal judge rejected former President Trump’s motion to dismiss a civil sexual assault lawsuit that a woman who has accused him of rape in the 1990s filed against him, ruling that the law that authorizes her to sue is allowed under the New York Constitution.
Journalist, author and advice columnist E. Jean Carroll filed her lawsuit against Trump in November after New York’s Adult Survivors Act (ASA), which gives individuals a one-year window to file lawsuits for old sexual misconduct allegations that have passed the statute of limitations, went into effect. She previously also filed a defamation suit against Trump for calling her a liar over her claims that he raped her and for demeaning her physical appearance.
Trump’s legal team argued that the law violates the state constitution’s due process provisions and is therefore unconstitutional. They also argued that Carroll’s defamation case should be dismissed because it does not meet the necessary standard for relief.
But U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that the law is constitutional, citing a ruling from the New York Court of Appeals that the test for if a claim-revival statute violates the state constitution’s due process clause should be whether the statute is “a reasonable measure to address injustice.”

4 – Eleven New Jersey police officers hospitalized after being exposed to fentanyl at house
Fox News reports: At least 11 New Jersey police officers were exposed to fentanyl while searching a home on Thursday and five people were arrested.
Camden County police officers executed search warrants at an apartment in the 1000 block of Harrison Avenue, in Collingswood, and at a residence on Eden Hollow Lane in Sicklerville, FOX Philadelphia reported.
During the search of the Collingswood home, 11 officers were exposed to fentanyl and required treatment. HAZMAT teams were called to the scene to assist.
One suspect, identified as Ali Cole, 49, was allegedly trying to destroy evidence during the search, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said. Authorities also found 1,000 fentanyl bags, $40,000, one semi-automatic handgun and various drug paraphernalia, among other items.
The 11 officers treated have been released from the hospital.
The other four men arrested were identified as Adam Brackenridge, 33; Donnell Horne, 40; and Stephen Thomas, 35; and 45-year-old Teronne Perry.
