1 – 6-year-old boy shoots teacher in Virginia elementary school
The Washington Post reports: A 6-year-old boy shot and wounded an elementary school teacher Friday in Newport News, Va., in a classroom with other pupils present, authorities said.
The female teacher, whose name was not disclosed, was shot with a handgun at about 2 p.m. at Richneck Elementary School, Newport News Police Chief Steve R. Drew said at a news briefing. He said the 6-year-old first-grader, who was taken into custody, had been involved in an altercation with the teacher. No students in the classroom were hurt.
Authorities said the teacher was hospitalized at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News and described her wounds as life-threatening.
The incident was confined to one room at the school, Drew said. “We did not have a situation where someone was going around the school shooting,” he said. “We had a situation in one particular location where a gunshot was fired.”
The school has 558 students in kindergarten through fifth grade in the current academic year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.
My administration has offered assistance in response to the shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News and stand at the ready to help in any way we can. I am continuing to monitor the situation and am praying for the continued safety of all students and the community.

Officials have not yet announced charges in the case. Virginia does not have a minimum age for prosecution of children, but the extraordinarily young age of the suspect is sure to raise questions about mental capacity and ability to understand what they did and that it was wrong.

ANNETA G: I think this is one of the saddest stories I’ve ever had to report.
2 – Texas Sues Biden Administration over Rule Making Americans Pay Immigration Welfare Costs
Breitbart reports: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration over its rule change allowing immigrants into the country who will be dependent on welfare, according to documents obtained by Breitbart News.
Federal immigration law has required a “public-charge” determination for immigrants, which bars them from staying in the country if they are likely to use welfare programs like food stamps, Medicaid, or government housing aid.
“The Biden Administration has demonstrated its intent not to enforce the law and to open the borders to illegal aliens who will be dependent upon welfare benefits,” a press release from Paxton’s office obtained by Breitbart News says.
Normally, immigrants provide financial proof that they would not sap taxpayer funds. The Biden administration’s rule “prevents consideration of statutorily required factors when determining whether an alien is likely to become a ‘public charge.’”
“The Biden Administration is committed to opening the borders to aliens who lack the ability to take care of themselves. Texans should not have to pay for these costly immigrants, nor should any other American,” Paxton said. “I will continue to defend the rule of law and fight to ensure that the massive costs of illegal immigration don’t further burden taxpayers.”
I’ve sued Biden over a dozen times to secure our southern border. Now, just as 2023 is starting, I’m bringing another lawsuit—the first of its kind in the nation on Biden’s disastrous new public-charge rule. I’ll keep suing & winning until he & his lawless Dems follow the law. https://t.co/xEyuK3NWyC

3 – FDA approves new Alzheimer’s drug… but its pricey
Fox Business reports: An Alzheimer’s drug from Biogen and Eisai has received accelerated approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the companies and agency announced Friday.
Lecanemab appeared to reduce brain amyloid plaque — a marker of Alzheimer’s — in a 865-patient study involving people with “mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage of the disease and confirmed presence of amyloid beta pathology” that the FDA based its decision on, the agency said. The drug, also known as Leqembi, is indicated for such people in its prescribing information.
Alzheimer’s disease “slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out simple tasks,” according to the FDA’s press release. In America, over 6.5 million people have it.
“This treatment option is the latest therapy to target and affect the underlying disease process of Alzheimer’s, instead of only treating the symptoms of the disease,” Dr. Bill Dunn, the FDA’s director of the Office of Neuroscience at its Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.
The drug will cost about $26,500 for a typical year’s worth of treatment. Eisai said the price reflects the drug’s benefit in terms of improved quality of life, reduced burdens for caregivers and other factors. The company pegged its value at over $37,000 per year, but said it priced the drug lower to reduce costs for patients and insurers. An independent group that assesses drug value recently said the drug would have to be priced below $20,600 per year to be cost-effective.
Today, we approved a new medication for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, the second of a new category of medications approved for Alzheimer’s that target the fundamental pathophysiology of the disease. https://t.co/ZXJCUuTYPk pic.twitter.com/TV36k6CO6K

ANNETA G: This is personal for me – I lost my grandfather to Alzheimers. What we need is someone to figure out exactly what causes this horrific disease, and what natural foods will prevent it. Enough drugs!
