Democrat journalists and members of the media  have reacted in outrage against Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer over his kind words about a Republican congressman.

Schumer released a statement Monday morning after longtime Republican congressman Peter King announced that he would not seek re-election in 2020.

Schumer wrote: “Peter King stood head & shoulders above everyone else. He’s been principled & never let others push him away from his principles. He’s fiercely loved America, Long Island, and his Irish heritage and left a lasting mark on all 3. I will miss him in Congress & value his friendship.”

Economist David Rothschild tweeted, “Has Sen. Schumer been hacked?”

Will Brunch, National opinion columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, fired back, demanding Schumer delete his tweet.

eRumors editor Brooke Binkowski tweeted, “He said Eric Garner was responsible for his own death because he was “so obese.” It seems you’re okay with that sort of statement. That explains a lot, Senator.”

Vox journalist Aaron Rupar declared, “Peter King is bad and Democrats should stop grading Republicans on a curve.”

Peter Daou, former Bill Clinton and John Kerry advisor, tweeted, “SERIOUSLY SCHUMER?? If you EVER wonder why I criticize Democratic “leaders”for enabling Republicans, look no further than this tweet.#PeteKing has praised Trump’s immigration policy, and here is @SenSchumer fawning over his “principles.” We need a new Democratic Party.”

NY Times op-ed writer and CNN contributor Wajahat Ali blasted Schumer over the remark in a pair of Twitter posts. He wrote, “Democrats need new leadership. This tweet…is stunning. Replace all the hateful conspiracy theories and fearmongering Peter King did of Muslims with any religious group, say Jews or Catholics, would Schumer tweet this? If so, why? Why would Democrats tolerate it?”

“Does Schumer even care about Muslim voters, 75% who vote for the Democratic Party? Peter King held multiple hearings on what he deemed was the “unique” radicalization of Muslims. Those hearings were deemed ineffective, counterproductive & dangerous by national security experts,” Ali added.

Eoin Thankins, senior editor and writer for “Common Dreams,” declared, “Peter King is one of the most aggressively, vilely racist members of Congress—but because his hateful bigotry targets Muslims, the Democratic Party’s leader in the Senate says this.”

Elie Mystal, editor for “Above The Law” blog, wrote, “Peter King is an Islamaphobe, a man who likened football players kneeling to giving the “nazi salute,” who has defended Trump throughout his corrupt and lawless administration. I will not miss him, @SenSchumer.”

Journalist Jules Suzdaltsev called for Schumer’s removal. He tweeted, “Let me be VERY clear: Chuck Schumer is unwilling to even CRITICIZE, much less actually oppose, the people whose ONLY goal is to dismantle our democracy in support of a fascist authoritarian regime. Chuck Schumer is an existential threat to this country and MUST be removed.”
