Today is March 1, and I am DML. The stories below are making headlines on this Sunday.
1- State of emergency in Washington state
The governor of Washington declared a state of emergency Saturday after a person died there of COVID-19, the first such reported death in the United States. More than 50 people in a nursing facility are sick and being tested for the virus.
Gov. Jay Inslee directed state agencies to use “all resources necessary” to prepare for and respond to the coronavirus outbreak. The declaration also allows the use of the Washington National Guard, if necessary.
DML: Wow! I’ve been all for getting in front of the virus, but this a bit extreme (to say the least).
2- Afghan deal hit a snag
Afghanistan’s president said Sunday that he will not free thousands of Taliban prisoners ahead of all-Afghan power-sharing talks set for next week, publicly disagreeing with a timetable for a speedy prisoner release laid out just a day earlier in a U.S.-Taliban peace agreement.
President Ashraf Ghani’s comments pointed to the first hitch in implementing the fragile deal, which is aimed at ending America’s longest war after more than 18 years and getting rival Afghan factions to agree on their country’s future.
Still, the U.S. has said a planned U.S. troop withdrawal over the next 14 months is linked to the Taliban’s counter-terrorism performance, not to progress in intra-Afghan talks.
DML: You can trust these people. There will never be peace when radical Muslims are in charge.
3- Biden victory in S.C.
Vice President Joe Biden has for weeks looked to the black voters of South Carolina to hand a win to his flagging campaign. On Saturday, they delivered.
Biden won 60% of the votes cast by non-white voters, dominating a crowded Democratic field among a group that made up more than half of the electorate. Biden also performed strongly with older voters, women, regular churchgoers and moderates and conservatives, according to AP VoteCast, a wide-ranging survey of more than 1,400 voters in South Carolina’s Democratic primary.
DML: Well, unfortunately for Joey the majority of the US is not African-American, so it looks like Bernie will be in action once the white voters dominate Super Tuesday. And in other news, Tom Steyer dropped out of the race. Reportedly, news outlets were in tears over losing his ad money. The bright side is, Bloomberg is still around.
4-Trump admin faces SCOTUS on Tuesday
The Supreme Court is about to tell President Donald Trump how much power he holds. A case being argued at the high court on Tuesday could threaten the structure of agencies that form an enormous swath of the federal government. It has to do with whether a president can fire the heads of independent agencies for any reason.
The case the justices are hearing involves the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the agency Congress created in response to the 2008 financial crisis. It was the brainchild of Massachusetts senator and Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren.
Experts say a decision could ultimately affect not only the CFPB but also how easily the president can fire a host of other independent agency heads, including leaders of the Federal Reserve, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Securities and Exchange Commission and Social Security Administration.
DML: Fire them all. Drain the swamp.
5- Walking on water with MIRACLE ME
Unfortunately, I can’t tell you who wrote this testimonial because all they left was an email address, but I think it’s a great addition for a Sunday morning.
