Gov. Josh Shapiro’s (D-PA) office announced on Tuesday that Pennsylvania is rolling out automatic voter registration ahead of what promises to be a close 2024 matchup in the battleground state.
Shapiro, who has emerged as a popular figure in the state, said the move would be beneficial for democracy.
“Automatic voter registration is a commonsense step to ensure election security and save Pennsylvanians time and tax dollars,” the governor said in a statement. “Residents of our Commonwealth already provide proof of identity, residency, age, and citizenship at the DMV — all the information required to register to vote — so it makes good sense to streamline that process with voter registration.”
“From now on in Pennsylvania, if you’re an eligible voter getting or renewing your driver’s license or ID card at the DMV, you will be automatically registered to vote unless you choose to opt out. Pennsylvania is an automatic voter registration state,” Shapiro announced Tuesday morning on social media.

Shapiro then posted a video statement touting the new automatic voter registration program.
“When running for Governor, I made a commitment to bring automatic voter registration to Pennsylvania — the birthplace of our democracy. On this National Voter Registration Day, I’m making that promise a reality,” he declared.

Prior to winning his race for the governor’s seat, Shapiro served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 2017 to January 2023.
Shapiro is a staunch, anti-Trump Democrat, and even touted BEFORE the 2020 election that Trump would lose Pennsylvania.
“Trump knows that if we add up all the votes here in Pennsylvania, the numbers won’t come out in his favor. So now, his strategy is to use lawsuits to systematically subtract votes. But he keeps losing in court,” Shapiro claimed in an Oct. 29, 2020 Twitter post.

Shapiro claimed in another October 2020 Twitter post that Trump was “trying to sow doubt in this election and to suppress the vote.”

In September 2022, Shapiro lashed out at his Republican opponent, Doug Mastriano, claiming, “For Doug Mastriano, this isn’t about the people of Pennsylvania — it’s about a victory for Donald Trump in 2024. He knows that the key to a presidential win is by winning Pennsylvania, and he’ll use whatever means necessary to make it happen. He’s too dangerous to be Governor.”

Now Shapiro has announced that anyone getting or renewing a drivers license or ID card in Pennsylvania will automatically be registered to vote unless they opt out.
He says he’s breaking down the barriers for “legal, eligible voters.”
