President Biden suffered a major setback over the weekend after his nominee to head the Federal Aviation Administration withdrew from consideration amid pushback from Senate Republicans and Sen. Kyrsten of Arizona, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington was unable to advance from a Senate committee despite Democrats controlling the chamber.

Republicans cited concerns that he was “unqualified” because he lacks aviation experience.

In a Twitter post late Saturday night, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg slammed Republican concerns as “partisan attacks” and wrote, “The FAA needs a confirmed Administrator, and Phil Washington’s transportation & military experience made him an excellent nominee. The partisan attacks and procedural obstruction he has faced are undeserved, but I respect his decision to withdraw and am grateful for his service.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) posted a video montage of footage from Washington’s confirmation hearing, as he repeatedly was unable to answer basic questions about airplanes and aviation safety.

“Phil Washington would need on the job training. He admits he has never flown an airplane, worked in air traffic control, or in aviation safety. The Biden White House should instead nominate someone who knows what the FAA needs, and can deliver,” Cruz tweeted.

Buttigieg had tweeted on March 1, “Now more than ever, the FAA needs a confirmed Administrator. Phil Washington’s proven record of guiding large transportation agencies through successful modernization and change is exactly what the agency needs. Glad his hearing is now underway.”

Below is more footage from Washington’s disastrous confirmation hearing, as he was unable to answer basic questions about the role to which he had been nominated.

On Fox News’ ‘The Big Sunday Show,’co-host Lisa Boothe said of Washington, “He is the CEO of Denver International Airport. I can’t think of what’s scarier, the fact that he was the pick for the FAA or that he’s the CEO of the Denver International Airport, and he knows nothing about aviation.”

Sen. Cruz spoke from the Senate floor last week and announced that Phil Washington is “wildly unqualified” to lead the FAA.

  1. Just like most of Mr Magoo’s nominees he checks the diversity box. Experience and qualifications are NOT important. Color and sexual orientation are all that matters for the job.

  2. Oh but he checks the diversity box, that’s all that matters. Experience and qualifications are not necessary to Mr Magoo.

  3. Just like all the other people that no nothing of what job they are doing. Everyone biden has picked is like this man. Pathetic

  4. Our transportation head is about as ignorant as they come…a senate confirmation is like a civilian job interview. They are going to ask questions to see if you are qualified for the job you are applying for, and those qualifications are knowledge of the position u wish to fill; NOT the color of your skin or your belief in equity. I promise u someone going in for surgery is not going to say I want this surgeon to operate on me because of the color of his skin…they are going to want a surgeon who has been properly trained in this procedure, has performed this procedure under the watchful eye of another surgeon with years of experience and been successful in this type of surgery before for goodness sakes.

  6. The only thing joe is good at is picking his seat when he has an itchy butt, or picking his nose to be rid of a bat in the cave…..ahhhh, a booger.

  7. Being a Pilot, Flight Dispatcher and having ATC certification, I answered all those questions, no problem. Even though retired, I still have all my flight manuals, Airman’s Information Manuals, charts, flight calculators, and manuals from about six differed fleet types (with variations). I would not accuse this man of being dumb, but he is just not suitable for this position. I respect him for withdrawing as a candidate. He already knew his limitations and that he could not execute the duties of the position.
