President Biden suffered a major setback over the weekend after his nominee to head the Federal Aviation Administration withdrew from consideration amid pushback from Senate Republicans and Sen. Kyrsten of Arizona, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington was unable to advance from a Senate committee despite Democrats controlling the chamber.

Republicans cited concerns that he was “unqualified” because he lacks aviation experience.

In a Twitter post late Saturday night, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg slammed Republican concerns as “partisan attacks” and wrote, “The FAA needs a confirmed Administrator, and Phil Washington’s transportation & military experience made him an excellent nominee. The partisan attacks and procedural obstruction he has faced are undeserved, but I respect his decision to withdraw and am grateful for his service.”

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) posted a video montage of footage from Washington’s confirmation hearing, as he repeatedly was unable to answer basic questions about airplanes and aviation safety.

“Phil Washington would need on the job training. He admits he has never flown an airplane, worked in air traffic control, or in aviation safety. The Biden White House should instead nominate someone who knows what the FAA needs, and can deliver,” Cruz tweeted.

Buttigieg had tweeted on March 1, “Now more than ever, the FAA needs a confirmed Administrator. Phil Washington’s proven record of guiding large transportation agencies through successful modernization and change is exactly what the agency needs. Glad his hearing is now underway.”

Below is more footage from Washington’s disastrous confirmation hearing, as he was unable to answer basic questions about the role to which he had been nominated.

On Fox News’ ‘The Big Sunday Show,’co-host Lisa Boothe said of Washington, “He is the CEO of Denver International Airport. I can’t think of what’s scarier, the fact that he was the pick for the FAA or that he’s the CEO of the Denver International Airport, and he knows nothing about aviation.”

Sen. Cruz spoke from the Senate floor last week and announced that Phil Washington is “wildly unqualified” to lead the FAA.
