Buster Murdaugh, Alex Murdaugh’s eldest son, is speaking out against what he describes as “baseless rumors” surrounding the 2015 death of his high school classmate, Stephen Smith.

“These baseless rumors of my involvement in Stephen’s death are false,” he said in a Monday statement shared by his family’s attorney, Jim Griffin, on Twitter.

Smith, who was 19 at the time of his death, was killed in what police initially described as a hit-and-run just miles from the Murdaughs’ Islandton, South Carolina, hunting property called Moselle, where Alex fatally shot his wife, Maggie, and his youngest son, Paul, on June 7, 2021.

Murdaugh said that he is trying to “ignore the vicious rumors” about his “involvement in Stephen’s Smith’s tragic death” as he grieves his mother and brother.

He wrote, “I haven’t spoken up until now because I want to live in private while I cope with their deaths and my father’s incarceration.” Murdaugh said he has been “targeted and harassed” by members of the media and the public.

Murdaugh added, “I unequivocally deny any involvement in [Stephen’s] death and my heart goes out to the Smith family.”

Reporter Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs tweeted Monday, “Buster Murdaugh, whose mother and brother were killed two years ago and whose father Alex was recently convicted in the murders, issues a statement. He denies any involvement in the death of Stephen Smith, 19, who was found dead in the middle of a road in 2015.”

“No one has been charged in Stephen Smith’s death, which was long considered an accident. The police reopened an investigation after the Murdaugh murders in 2021. Many online have suggested Buster could have been involved, but there has been no actual evidence of that. Stephen Smith’s mother, Sandy, has raised $65,000 to exhume his body so that another autopsy can be conducted. One of Sandy’s lawyers said just now: ‘It makes no sense that he could be struck … and there would be no vehicle debris.'”

“Eric Bland, a lawyer who is now representing Stephen Smith’s mom, says just now: ‘As we sit here today, Buster is a victim. He lost a mother, brother, now his father’s in jail… We have no knowledge at all of Buster or the Murdaughs having anything to do with this right now.'”
