House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) unleashed a marathon tirade overnight in opposition to President Biden’s social spending bill, ranting for more than 8 hours on the House floor and breaking a record for the chamber’s longest continuous speech in modern history.

McCarthy spoke for 8 hours and 33 minutes and ripped the nearly $2 trillion Build Back Better package as the “single most reckless and irresponsible spending bill in our nation’s history.”

The article goes on to state the following:

“Let me be clear: Never in American history has so much been spent at one time – at one time,” McCarthy seethed in his monologue, which began at 8:38 p.m. Thursday and finished at 5:11 a.m. Friday.

In addition to blasting the legislation they were about to vote on, McCarthy slammed Democrats and the Biden administration over a slew of issues, including the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, the flood of illegal aliens being allowed to pour across the border, and the administration’s plan to pay millions of dollars to illegal aliens who were separated at the border.

As McCarthy’s fiery speech continued longer and longer, Democrats yelled out in protest, demanding that he stop so they could vote.

“It’s okay. I’ll be here a long time,” McCarthy retorted. “I think I’m upsetting other people on the other side of the aisle by telling them what’s in the bill. They just yelled at me that they’re leaving.”

After several hours, McCarthy said, “If I sound angry, I am. I’m just getting geared up, go just sit. I know you don’t like me, but that’s OK.”

“I know some of you are mad at me, think I spoke too long. But I’ve had enough. America has had enough,” he declared.

Floor speeches usually last one minute during House debates.  As McCarthy was wrapping up his 8 1/2 hour speech, he quipped, “this one minute feels almost like eight hours now.”

“This is the longest one minute I’ve ever given, it’s the longest one minute ever given in this body. There’s a reason why,” he added.

Prior to his speech, McCarthy announced on Twitter, “We are minutes away from voting on a 2,145 page, $5 TRILLION bill. Never in American history has so much been spent at one time. I’m heading to the House floor to expose this for what it is → a Socialist Spending Scam.”

RNC Research share clips from the marathon speech:

McCarthy’s spokesperson, Chad Gilmartin, tweeted one quote from the speech: .@GOPLeader to House Democrats: “You’re hiring 87,000 new I.R.S. agents – not one border patrol agent.”

Throughout the speech, many lawmakers from both sides of the aisle hopped on Twitter to cheer him on, or vent their frustration.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla): .@GOPLeader is bringing it on the floor right now!

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks: I applaud @GOPleader for his willingness to stand up for hardworking Americans and for fighting against the reckless tax-and-spend reconciliation package put forward by the Administration and the *slim* majority in Congress.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.):  If you took the worst orator in the world, Gave him the worst speech in the world, And made him read it for the longest time in the world, That would be a lot like listening to Kevin McCarthy tonight. Except, probably better.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD): Two hours into Kevin McCarthy’s unhinged diatribe obstructing passage of the Build Back Better Act, Albert Einstein comes to mind: “If people only talked about what they understood, Earth would be a very quiet place.”

My favorite moment was when Kevin McCarthy in the first 90 minutes of his diatribe said, “Nobody elected Joe Biden to be FDR,” and @AOC shouted, “I DID!”

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was 275 words and less than three minutes long. Two hours and seven minutes into McCarthy’s rant, it is clear the world will little note nor long remember what he says here.

I must admit Kevin McCarthy has accomplished one thing. America is no longer woke.

More from Raskin: Kevin McCarthy promised he would give us all his wisdom about government. At 11:30 pm, I don’t know how much wiser we are but we are definitely older.

Somalian refugee Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.): Looks like @GOPLeader is auditioning for a job that his Qanon caucus will never let him have, they will nominate Trump or Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House if they get the chance and he is just making a clown of himself for nothing.

Black Lives Matter activist Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) implied racism in McCarthy’s speech: On behalf of the Black and brown women he’s trying to deny lifesaving benefits, I motion to have the Trump Minority Leader stop talking.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.)Y’all, never forget this moment next time the @GOP tries to tell you they care about working people & families. The only thing @GOPLeader cares about is wasting our time. Miss me with that.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY)I’d like a CBO score on Kevin McCarthy’s speech.

Rep. Andy Levin (D-MI): Magic minute? Magic hour? Magic lifetime! If McCarthy’s “one minute” speech is magic, please saw me in half and put me out of my misery.

Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY)Andy, we need you to vote first.

Levin continues: This dude has talked so long that the weather changed. Silver lining: I don’t need to take my umbrella to the Floor for my walk home.

We’ve passed the two hour mark. Thunder signifying . . . nothing.

I’ve got nothing but time. McCarthy can talk all night long. But there’s one thing you can take to the bank: Democrats will deliver President Biden’s Build Back Better Act whenever McCarthy sits down.

Dang. I could have taken my son for ice cream. Gone home and done a few loads of laundry. Packed my bag for tomorrow. Maybe pre-cooked a turkey!

OK, Kev, my staff is getting tired of my corny tweets. Actually, I think they’re just getting tired, period. We’re not as young as we once were, before you started talking.

I have an idea! Let’s have our leader talk until the wee hours and then thunder, dripping with insincerity, “How dare they pass this huge bill in the middle of the night?!”

Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.)This speech by @GOPLeader is the longest month of my life.

House Republicans tweeted, “House Democrats CANNOT vote on their Far-Left Socialist Spending Spree until @GOPLeader stops speaking. HOLD THE LINE!”

Politico reporter Sarah Ferris tweeted, “WELL.. Dems really not pleased with McCarthy’s delay tactics. Some would rather just vote tmrw (tho unlikely) I’m told at least a few have left the Capitol and went back to their DC apartments. McCarthy seems to have a good chunk of pages left in his binder, per @nicholaswu12.”

The House Judiciary GOP responded, “Dems giving up. Go, @GOPLeader, go!”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office released the following statement:

We’re glad we’re not the only ones who can’t follow Minority Leader McCarthy’s meandering rant that has nothing to do with the Build Back Better Act. Tonight Kevin McCarthy previewed Republicans very best attacks against the deficit reducing, inflation crushing Build Back Better Act.

As he hopefully approaches the end, we’re all left wondering: does Kevin McCarthy know where he is right now?

NOTE: Pelosi previously held the record for the longest speech on the House floor, when she spoke for over 8 hours in 2018, demanding the House GOP leaders hold a vote on immigration reform.

Below is McCarthy’s record-breaking speech:

  1. EVERYONE needs to play close attention to who votes YES on this. REPUBLICANS and DEMOCRATS alike. Whomever votes YES needs to be removed from office in the next election.
