The city has agreed to shell out $21,500 to each of the more than 300 protesters who were confined and some beaten or pepper-sprayed by NYPD officers in The Bronx during the nationwide 2020 George Floyd demonstrations.

The proposed settlement — which will have to be signed off on by a federal judge — was published in a Manhattan federal class-action suit filed by the protesters who were “kettled” by cops at the protest in Mott Haven on June 4, 2020.

Protesters who were unlawfully charged with a crime after being confined by officers will receive an additional $2,500, according to the terms of the settlement.

The report explains that New York City will have to fork over a whopping $6 million to the protesters if Judge Colleen McMahon signs off on the deal.

As Black Lives Matter and Antifa activists took to the streets in violent protests after the death of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, New York City had imposed an 8pm curfew.

On June 4, 2020, an anti-police group called “Take Back The Bronx” taunted the NYPD by posting a photo on their Instagram page of an NYPD vehicle going up in flames, and called on protesters to assemble at 6:30 p.m. that day.

“We talking about a revolution god dammit!” they wrote.

Police had reportedly corralled about 300 protesters that night, then arrested them all just after 8pm, announcing afterwards that they had confiscated hammers, lighter fluid, gas masks and fireworks from people they arrested.

Upon learning of the city’s agreement to give each of the protesters $21,500 as a “settlement,” one NYPD officer in the Bronx voiced his outrage.

“Kettling? That’s what we do. It’s not like they do it because these guys are model citizens. They’re doing it because they’re committing crimes or not following orders. One or two of them might have been swept in there just because of wrong place, wrong time. But people were looting stores and causing mayhem at some of these protests.”

Below is the Instagram post that initiated the protest – which is still up on the group’s account:

The “Take Back the Bronx” Instagram account is filled with posts calling to abolish the police, and free all inmates from prison.  They label police officers as “pigs” and call for protests.

Many posts on the Instagram account also show pro-Palestine demonstrations.

Another shocking Instagram post by the group in May 2021 glorifies a man from the Bronx who was arrested for dealing drugs and shot six NYPD officers.  The post says the man was later killed in prison.  The group announces in the Instagram post that they are honoring his “radical legacy.”

Chris Monahan, President of the NYPD Captains Endowment Association, tweeted, “This is disgraceful! The Executive Branch of New York City signed an executive order. This is the law that NYPD officers have sworn to protect. NYC Law Department, FIGHT THIS! Don’t settle.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) tweeted in fury, “Federal judge should DENY this settlement.”

“It’s infuriating that NYC would put taxpayers on the hook for $6 million to reward professional agitators. This is a MAJOR concession to lawlessness, sends the WRONG message and should be STOPPED!”

  4. Let me get this straight. Thugs can loot and destroy and if police attempt to stop them, they can sue in a class action lawsuit and get thousands of dollars instead of jail time. WHAT??

  5. This is outrageous and will only encourage further belligerence toward the police and protests that are anything but peaceful.

    Serves them right.
But those who complain the most are the ones who will call for police first.
Let them whine. See where that gets them!

This money should go to police!

    • I agree 100% , this state doesn’t deserve any police. NY should live in mayhem until they get someone with a brain to run the state
