LONDON, Jan 19 (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the end of COVID-19 measures including mandatory face masks in England as he looks to live with the virus after a peak in cases caused by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

Johnson’s light touch approach to dealing with Omicron saw him introduce work-at-home advice and vaccine passes as well as more mask-wearing on Dec. 8, although he stopped short of more onerous restrictions seen globally.

The article goes on to state the following:

While cases soared to record highs, hospitalisations and deaths have not risen by the same extent, in part due to Britain’s booster rollout and the variant’s lesser severity.

In a separate report, BBC provided the following details on the new, relaxed rules for England:

  • Mandatory Covid passports for entering nightclubs and large events would end, though organizations could choose to use the NHS Covid pass if they wished
  • People would no longer be advised to work from home and should discuss their return to offices with employers
  • Face masks will no longer be mandated, though people are still advised to wear coverings in enclosed or crowded spaces and when meeting strangers
  • From Thursday, secondary school pupils will no longer have to wear face masks in classrooms and government guidance on their use in communal areas would be removed “shortly”

In a series of Twitter posts on Wednesday, Johnson released the following statement:

We were the first nation in the world to administer a vaccine, and one of the fastest in Europe to roll it out. This was because we made the big call to pursue our own vaccine procurement, outside of the EMA.

We made the tough decision to open up last summer when others said that we shouldn’t, and kept open this winter while others locked down. As a result, we have the most open economy and society in Europe, and the fastest growing economy in the G7.

We’re the first to emerge from the Omicron wave, because we focused our NHS on delivering the fastest booster campaign in Europe.

And it is because of the extraordinary booster campaign – together with the way the public have responded to the Plan B measures – that we can return to Plan A in England and allow Plan B regulations to expire.

Confronted by the nation’s biggest challenge since the Second World War and the worst pandemic since 1918, any government would get some things wrong. But this government got the big things right.

Several in the United States are praising Johnson, and declaring that the United States should have already taken the same position:
