Republican Mayra Flores is projected to win a special election in Texas’ 34th Congressional District, flipping a House seat after Rep. Filemon Vela, who held the seat for nearly 10 years, resigned in March and vacated the seat.

Flores, who had 51% of the vote to Democratic candidate Dan Sanchez’ 43% when The Associated Press called the race, will become the first Mexican-born congresswoman to serve in the House. Her family moved to the United States when she was 6 years old.

The article goes on to state the following:

Flores will finish out the remainder of Vela’s term, which expires in January, and Republicans were eager to win the seat and gain new ground in the Lone Star state to represent the district that spans east of San Antonio with parts along the coast to Brownsville. As currently drawn, the 34th Congressional District will essentially be dissolved later this year after a newly redrawn map favoring current 15th Congressional District Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, the Democratic nominee for November’s general election to represent the 34th District, was constructed.

However, Flores will attempt to hold on to the seat, running against Gonzalez in the November general election to represent the newly redrawn 34th Congressional District.

Flores, a 2019 graduate from South Texas College, was endorsed by Gov. Greg Abbott.  She is married to a U.S. Border Patrol agent, and stressed the need to “secure our borders and keep our families safe” in an earlier campaign video.

The far left are destroying the American dream. When I was little my family legally immigrated to America. They taught me conservative values: faith, family, & hard work. I will not let the far left & socialist policies by the Biden Administration destroy this great country #TX34,” Flores wrote on Twitter last month.

Former President Donald Trump congratulated Flores in a post on Truth Social. He wrote, “Mayra Flores is the BIG winner in the Texas Special Election. No Republican has ever won this district. We are all really proud of Mayra. Great things to come!!!”

Flores also made history in another first – she became the first Republican who Tesla owner Elon Musk has ever voted for.

“I voted for Mayra Flores – first time I ever voted Republican. Massive red wave in 2022,” Musk wrote on Twitter.

“Elon Musk votes for Mayra Flores in Texas special election, and also predicted a massive red wave is coming in 2022!!#SaveAmerica #TX34,” Flores tweeted.

“I woke up this morning still feeling surreal from everything that’s happened over the last 24 hours. Earning Elon Musk’s vote was just the icing on the cake and I can’t wait to work with his team! The American Dream is worth fighting for 🇺🇸 @elonmusk#SaveAmerica #TX34,” she wrote in another tweet.

Writer Nick Adams tweeted, “BREAKING: The first Mexican-born member of Congress will be Mayra Flores (R-TX), who won by 7% tonight in a district Joe Biden won by 4% in 2020. She is a LEGAL immigrant, an America First Patriot, and a great supporter of President Trump! Liberals must be losing their minds!”
