Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has axed the dress code that requires legislators to wear professional attire on the Senate floor months after Sen. John Fetterman was slammed for wearing a hoodie.
Schumer (D-NY) quietly directed the Senate’s Sergeant at Arms to stop enforcing the dress code that mandates male senators wear a jacket and tie and female senators a dress or other businesswear on the floor, Axios reported Sunday.
The change in policy comes after Fetterman (D-Pa.) was bashed by conservatives for wearing a hoodie, gym shorts and sneakers to the chamber. Many called his casual fashion choices disrespectful.
Schumer told Axios, “Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit.”
However, senate staff members will still be required to wear professional work-appropriate clothes, Schumer has stated.
Former Rep. Justin Amash, a Libertarian, responded to Schumer’s new policy, writing on social media, “Awful. The Senate chamber isn’t your home, a gym, or an outdoor park. If you can’t dress professionally for work on the floor of the Senate of the United States, then do us all a favor and get a different job.”

Rep. Marjory Taylor Greene also slammed the move, writing, “The Senate no longer enforcing a dress code for Senators to appease Fetterman is disgraceful. Dress code is one of society’s standards that set etiquette and respect for our institutions. Stop lowering the bar!”

“Slobs of the world unite!” tweeted Fox News host Laura Ingraham, in response to the report.
“Schumer proves once again he is an absolutely horrible Majority Leader. What a disgrace and disrespect to the institution. Get dressed for work people, it’s not that hard,” wrote Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich.
Former Trump official Stephen Miller wrote, “So let me get this straight. The entire senate is jettisoning its storied history and debasing itself before the world to accommodate the slovenliness of one man, John Fetterman? Will a single Senator object to this humiliation?”
