The U.S. has reached a deal with the Taliban to ensure that evacuations from Kabul’s airport can take place without interference from the group, according to a report by The Associated Press.
The deal was reached in talks in Doha, Qatar, between senior Taliban officials and Gen. Frank McKenzie.
The article goes on to state the following:
The two sides apparently agreed to a “deconfliction mechanism” in which operations at the airport in Kabul are permitted to continue without interference from the Taliban.
According to the report, McKenzie informed the Taliban that any interference at the airport would be met with force from the US military.
Defense Department spokesman John Kirby, who would not divulge the details of McKenzie’s conversations with the militants, did say that “the general was very clear and firm in his discussions with Taliban leaders that any attack on our people or on our operations at the airport would be met swiftly with a very forceful response, and I think I’ll leave it at that.”
