Shampoo RECALL over fears of bacteria that can KILL 1 in 10 customers

In this DML Report…
Over 1,000 bottles of Tec Italy Shampoo for dry and damaged hair have been recalled due to contamination with Klebsiella oxytoca, a bacterium that can kill up to 20% of patients if it spreads beyond the intestinal tract, mouth, or nose into the bloodstream. Germany-based Henkel, the manufacturer, voluntarily initiated the recall after the FDA confirmed the presence of the bacteria in 1,068 units shipped from a facility in Mexico. The affected products were distributed to salons in the U.S. through C&R Beauty, Caesar’s Professional Products Inc., and Vero Beauty Distributors, though the exact number of salons and customers impacted remains unclear.

The recall targets a specific batch of Tec Italy Shampoo, a brand commonly sold at major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Amazon, but only the salon-distributed units are affected. Klebsiella oxytoca, while naturally occurring in the body, becomes dangerous when it migrates to other areas, posing a significant risk of fatal infections. The FDA has not reported any illnesses linked to this recall as of March 24, 2025, but consumers who purchased the shampoo from salons are urged to stop using it immediately and contact the distributors for further instructions.

Henkel’s swift action followed routine testing that identified the contamination, prompting the company to pull the product to prevent potential health risks. The recall underscores ongoing concerns about bacterial contamination in cosmetics, with this incident adding to a series of similar issues reported in recent years. Customers seeking more details can refer to the FDA’s announcement, while those with health concerns should consult a medical professional promptly.
