Massive power outages across 3 European countries, impacting millions
In this DML Report…
A massive power outage struck Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France, disrupting electricity across the Iberian Peninsula and affecting millions. The blackout, which began around noon, knocked out subway networks, phone lines, traffic lights, and ATM machines, causing widespread chaos. Major airports in Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia faced severe disruptions, with air traffic in Spain and Portugal operating at half capacity, impacting 500 flights and nearly 10,000 seats from UK airports alone. Spanish train operator Renfe reported a nationwide power failure, halting trains and canceling departures, while Lisbon’s roads saw standstill traffic due to inoperative signals.
The cause of the outage remains unclear, though Portugal’s government suggested it originated outside the country, possibly in Spain’s distribution network. Spain’s grid operator, Red Eléctrica, estimated a 6-10 hour restoration period, with power gradually returning in northern and southern Spain by early afternoon. The Portuguese National Cybersecurity Center ruled out a cyberattack, and Red Eléctrica’s operations head called the event “exceptional and extraordinary.” Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and energy minister visited Red Eléctrica’s control center to oversee recovery efforts, while Portugal’s Cabinet held an emergency meeting. The outage also hit parts of Andorra, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, though southwestern France saw power restored quickly.

The blackout’s impact extended beyond transport, shutting down internet services, businesses, and even oil refineries in affected areas. Madrid’s mayor urged residents to minimize movement, and emergency services advised against non-essential travel. Ryanair and Jet2 issued statements monitoring potential flight disruptions, while Gatwick Airport reported short delays on flights to Spain and Portugal. The Madrid Open tennis tournament suspended play due to the outage. With over 50 million people in Spain and Portugal potentially affected, authorities are investigating the cause, and grid operators are working to fully restore power.
