M&M’s dropped bittersweet news on Monday, announcing that the “beloved spokescandies” are too polarizing and that the cartoon chocolates would be put on an “indefinite pause” after widespread backlash to recent changes that were widely considered “woke.”

The candy maker has taken steps to become more inclusive, but those plans have melted away – at least until the Super Bowl on Feb. 12.

“America, let’s talk. In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies. We weren’t sure if anyone would even notice. And we definitely didn’t think it would break the internet. But now we get it – even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing. Which was the last thing M&M’s wanted since we’re all about bringing people together,” the company tweeted.

The statement continues: “Therefore, we have decided to take an indefinite pause from the spokescandies. In their place, we are proud to introduce a spokesperson America can agree on: the beloved Maya Rudolph. We are confident Ms. Rudolph will champion the power of fun to create a world where everyone feels they belong.”

In September, M&M rolled out it’s newest spokescandy, Purple, “designed to represent acceptance and inclusivity.”

Now, instead of reverting back to the M&M spokescandies everyone loved, the company has decided to just eliminate them entirely.

Alec Sears, who serves as Social Media and Digital Strategy for the GOP, tweeted, “Oh my god, they killed the M&M candy people. They took them outside one by one and shot them in the back of the head.”

Radio host Jason Rantz tweeted, “You mean, your sales dipped after going woke and you don’t want to admit it outright?”

“Someone realized what the old saying, “Go woke, Go Broke” means…” mocked comedian Tim Young.

In January of last year, the VP of M&Ms announced that they were making the M&Ms characters more inclusive in order to “start a movement.”
