The National Parks Service Instagram account recently shared a photo of a bug taken from Big Bend National Park in Texas. This image shows an arachnid that looks like a cross between a spider and a scorpion.

The animal is known as a vinegaroon but is also referred to as the whip scorpion. According to the Big Bend Facebook page, these critters surface during the summer looking for “food and love.”

The article goes on to state the following:

While the image garnered a lot of attention on Instagram, it originated from The Big Bend National Park Facebook page. The national park posted, “Vinegaroons are about 3 inches long and relatively benign unless you happen to annoy them. They can pinch with their heavy mouthparts (pedipalps) and shoot a well-aimed spray of 85% acetic acid (vinegar) from the base of their ‘whip’ to protect themselves.”

The report also states that vinegaroons are not venomous.

Gwen Pearson, whose Twitter account says she specializes in insect education, shared the following:

So apparently there is a syndicated story going around about “acid squirting land lobsters from hell” and… it’s a completely HARMLESS vinegaroon. Here’s one we have in the bug zoo.

They are delightful, shy predators native to American deserts. They can squirt a tiny amount of vinegar. They have no venom. And I’m trying really hard not to go off here, but I’m just livid about this fear-mongering.

  1. They are as dumb as a box of rocks! We have a different species of them but they are wrong! Those things run right at you! We have known people bitten! You get a vinegar taste in your mouth its not nice! I had one in the garage yeaterday! And they are fast! And they run at you ! We have had them for centuries!

  2. Good grief! These critters are around every summer, if I happen to catch one crawling into my garage or porch I gently sweep it outside. They eat other spiders but are harmless to humans.

  3. Must be someone from the fake media spreading the fear mongering. They are food at tall tails and fake stories
