Two Florida sheriff’s deputies who were in a relationship have died by suicide just days apart last week, leaving their newborn son an orphan.
St Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara announced on Tuesday the deaths of deputies Clayton Osteen and Victoria Pacheco. They had served on the force since November 2019 and February 2020, respectively.
The article goes on to state the following:
Mascara said that shortly before midnight on New Year’s Eve, the sheriff’s office got a call about an attempted suicide.
Osteen, a retired U.S. Marine, had attempted suicide while he was off duty on New Year’s Eve.
Mascara’s statement continues:
“On Sunday, January 2, Deputy Osteen’s family made the very difficult decision to remove him from life support. This morning we learned that Deputy Pacheco, who shared a one-month-old-son with Deputy Osteen, took her own life in the wake of Deputy Osteen’s death. Words cannot express the tremendous loss we all feel after losing these two members of our Sheriff’s Office family.”
The couple’s baby boy, Jayce Osteen, was born on November 22. A GoFundMe account has been established for the baby.
According to the description on the GoFundMe page, Osteen was 24, and Pacheco was 23.
Osteen’s brother, who is also a St. Lucie Deputy, has taken custody of Baby Jayce, according to a Facebook post by another law enforcement official.
