A Black Lives Matter activist successfully beat out a Des Moines City Council incumbent following Tuesday’s election.

“We just won our campaign on a platform centered on Defunding the Police for Safety and Justice. It can be done. My goal for this city has always been to work from the bottom up. Not the top down,” activist Indira Sheumaker said in a campaign statement on Tuesday.

The article goes on to state the following:

Sheumaker, who was elected to be the Des Moines City Council member for Ward 1, ousted incumbent Bill Gray, who was first elected in 2014, according to The Des Moines Register.

Sheumaker, who campaigned on issues such as defunding the police, fighting corporate greed and access to food and housing, received 46.36 percent of the vote, while Gray received 36.32 percent.  A third candidate, Marcus Coenen, received 16.82% of the vote.

Sheumaker said she decided to run for city council after being involved in last year’s protests with the Black Liberation Movement, and then started attending city council meetings.

Sheumaker received a note of congratulations from the Central Iowa Democrat Socialists of America.

“We want to send a hearty congratulations to @Indira4DSM for running and winning a people-driven campaign. Thank you to her and the incredible people who helped her campaign. Good things are coming here,” the DSA wrote.

Run For Something, a group that recruits and supports young progressive candidates, celebrated Sheumaker’s victory:

Sheumaker is already fundraising for the future. On Wednesday, she tweeted, “Our campaign has BIG plans post election. This has always been a people focused campaign and this will continue. Donate to the Indira for the People campaign as we prepare for a harsh winter.”

  1. Yeah give it a year or so and this “child” of politics will be crying’ for help, wondering why their murder rates are so high. To the average person with a brain, we can see this from a mile away!
Adios Iowa!! Land of the brain dead, wanna-be socialists (who don’t even understand socialism)!

  2. What a crock of shit. What in the hell is wrong with Des Moines? That pos shouldn’t have got 5%. I guess we know Des Moines is a shit hole.

  3. I’m freaking out on the dude behind her with the big mustache and red evening gown on
It’s beginning to look like Californication

  4. I canr actually say what I would like to but you voted for it y’all gonna get exactly what you deserve. Another mouthy time waster willing to destroy sh!t to get its way. Someting not quite kosher going on here. I think an early recall might be in the works. Looking forward to that bodycam roadside arrest video with those oh so entitled words. “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM” which should generate an automatic corruption arrest but never does.

  5. That Liberation party are worse than progressives and didn’t the people that voted for see what is happening in other cities that lost many on their police. That woman knows and yet she doesn’t care. If you voted for her you will get what you voted for.

  6. She is the exact reason everyone should vote, cannot depend on everyone else to make the correct choice. If it hadn’t been for the split in votes, and as I suspect every one had voted this girl would not have been elected. Cannot underestimate these “progressives”. They are just puppets for something more sinister. I am sure there are some shocked people in Des Moines but this is what happens when you underestimate the other guy. Hopefully she will not cause too much damage but not holding my breath. Sad for Des Moines

  7. I DIDNT THINK THAT THE PEOPLE IN DES MOINES WERE THAT BRAIN DEAD, VOTING IN THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE,THIS WILL SEND THE CITY INTO NOTHING BUT A CITY OF VIOLENCE.
BLM ARE A MARXIST GROUP AND THEY ARE TERRORIST, VOTING HAS CONSEQUENCES AND VOTING THIS UGLY POS WILL DO A LOT OF HARM.
THE PEOPLE OF DES MOINES VOTED IN EVIL AND UNFORTUNATELY WILL SEE THE RESULTS.

  8. You are not unique. Seattle voted in a bunch of radical young smart asses and has paid the price. Their city is dying and people are fed up. People better get out and vote for all their citizens and their safety. You guys are in for a wake up call. Seattle has lost 300 officers in two years and no one decent wants to work there. Enter crime and corruption.

  9. She won’t last. she doesn’t have what it takes. It’s a like giving a gun to a child.
You just can’t fix stupid people who vote for people like her. Go ahead and defund the police. I’ll set back and watch your city burn.

  10. Elections have consequences, and this city will pay for their stupidity. Defund the police is the worst idea ever, cannot believe this is what she ran on and won. Those people will get what they deserve.

  11. Absolutely pathetic and keep electing these dummies and you deserve exactly what you voted for. Weed and defunding the police what a platform! AND the incredibly ignorant people actually voted for this clown WOW. Dumbing down of America has worked!
