The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday clarified its stance on various kinds of masks, acknowledging that the cloth masks frequently worn by Americans do not offer as much protection as surgical masks or respirators.
While this disparity is widely known to the general public, the update marks the first time the C.D.C. has explicitly addressed the differences. The agency’s website also no longer refers to a shortage of respirators.
The article goes on to state the following:
The change comes as infections with the highly contagious Omicron variant continue to soar. Some experts have said that cloth masks are inadequate to protect from the variant, and have urged the C.D.C. to recommend respirators for ordinary citizens.
The report notes how the messaging from the CDC has evolved and changed since the coronavirus pandemic began.
Previously, the CDC recommendations advised people to choose to use a disposable N95 respirator instead of a mask “when supplies are available.”
Early in the pandemic, the C.D.C. and the World Health Organization both said that ordinary citizens did not need to wear masks unless they were sick and coughing.

NEW: Any mask is better than no mask. But loosely woven cloth masks provide the least amount of protection and Americans in some cases might want to opt for higher quality masks like KN95 and N95 respirators, the CDC wrote in updated online guidance. https://t.co/9VkLlpQoCZ

Of course what they should acknowledge is almost all the masks you’ve seen for the past two years, especially on kids, are essentially worthless security blankets for the overanxious, but that will probably take another three years, until we have a new president.

It’s well past time for the CDC to update their mask guidance to recommend N95, KN95, or KF94 masks. Covid is airborne. Omicron is extremely contagious. The federal government should recommend the highest quality masks, and make them available free of charge. @CNNSitRoom pic.twitter.com/bT8pUbCtYm

Breaking News: For the first time, the CDC said cloth masks weren’t as effective as other options. “Wear the most protective mask you can,” the agency urged. https://t.co/zOIRim0WQZ
