Mars Wrigley, the company that produces the Snickers candy bar, issued an apology to China on Friday after suggesting that Taiwan is an independent country.

Snickers had promoted a limited edition candy bar with videos and pictures advertising that it was only available in the “countries’ of South Korea, Malaysia, and Taiwan, Reuters reported.

The article goes on to state the following:

After the post went viral on social media, including on the Chinese microblogging platform Weibo, the company issued an apology.

Mars wrote, “Mars Wrigley respects China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity and conducts its business operations in strict compliance with local Chinese laws and regulations.”

Human rights activist Drew Pavlou tweeted Friday, “Major political victory for Xi Jinping ahead of the National People’s Congress elections: China has compelled Snickers chocolate bar to denounce Taiwan and affirm enduring respect for China’s territorial integrity. Taiwan will fall any day now.”

BBC China media analyst Kerry Allen wrote, “Latest news on Taiwan: Snickers is now apparently cancelled. To give you a sense of the most popular comments targeted at the chocolate bar: ‘Is it so hard to say there is only one China?’ ‘Say Taiwan is an inseparable part of China.’ ‘I will not buy Snickers again!’ ‘I don’t accept your apology!'”

China bureau chief for the WSJ Jonathan Cheng tweeted, “In case you’re wondering what stance the maker of Snickers bars has on Taiwan: ‘Mars Wrigley respects China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity and conducts its business operations in strict compliance with local Chinese laws and regulations.'”

Data scientist analyst Jessica Drun said, “Here we go again. Snickers parent company apologizes to PRC for suggesting Taiwan is a country in an ad: ‘Mars Wrigley respects China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.'”
