Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) brushed off NRA opposition to his gun control package Wednesday, noting that the gun rights group cannot be allowed to “veto good public policy.”

Breitbart News reported that the Senate gun control package negotiated by Cornyn, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), and others, was put before the public on Tuesday.

The article goes on to state the following:

The bill expands background checks for some gun buyers, uses taxpayer money incentivize red flag laws, and broadens the NICS prohibited purchasers’ list (by using domestic violence statutes to cover dating relationships).

The report notes that the bill also increases penalties for straw purchases and gun trafficking, although neither of which crimes were part of the mass shootings in Uvalde, Buffalo, Parkland, Las Vegas, or Orlando, to name a few.

“This legislation can be abused to restrict lawful gun purchases, infringe upon the rights of law-abiding Americans, & use fed dollars to fund gun control measures being adopted by state & local politicians,” the NRA warned in a statement.

  1. The NRA hasn’t always done what’s best for gun owners when it comes to its opinions on legislation but they are correct with this one. Incentivized red flag laws: no nothing can go wrong there for the law abiding. Just one more chip off the 2nd amendment. Joe’s plan to stop the manufacture of certain ammunition is another back door tactic: if you can’t get ammo for the firearms they’ve deemed need to go, they’re essentially useless.

  2. Cornyn increasingly gives the constituents in Texas who supported him the middle finger.

I think he’s planning to retire (thank goodness), and he doesn’t care that he is blatantly disregarding what the majority of the constituents want.

Yes, the shooting in Uvalde was a terrible occurrence, but removing the rights of law abiding citizens via red flag laws that only pay lip service to due process for the citizens.

This is bad legislation. The senate is implementing these laws and having the states be the enforcers of these laws.

After so many states overrode citizens’ rights -for so long – in the false guise of the public’s health during the pandemic, I don’t trust these “leaders” to constitutionally enforce this legislation.

I sure hope Texans are already looking for a candidate for a Texas senator to replace cornyn.
