“Defund the police” supporter Rep. Ilhan Omar’s city is experiencing a sharp increase in most crimes, data shows. The spike comes just one year after she backed a failed campaign to dismantle and replace the Minneapolis Police Department.
Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which encompasses the city of Minneapolis. So far this year, citywide crimes have spiked in nine of 14 categories over the same time period last year, according to a Fox News Digital review of crime statistics.
The article goes on to state the following:
“Minneapolis is a case study in what happens when municipal leaders decide to demonize the police and criminal justice system for their political advantage,” Charles Fain Lehman, a Manhattan Institute fellow who works on the group’s policing and public safety initiative, told Fox News Digital.
After the violent protests over the death of criminal George Floyd in May 2020, violent crime in Minneapolis skyrocketed, the report explains.
Last year, the city saw 96 murders – just one short of the record-high in 1997. Other crime categories also surged over the past year, including:
- Car theft has increased by 32.3%
- Larceny/thefts are up 30.4%
- Carjackings are up 21.1% this year
- Destruction of property is up 12.8%
- Assaults have risen by 11.4%
- Burglaries and breaking and entering incidents have increased by 10.3%
In Minnesota’s Democrat primary last week, Omar narrowly won by only 2,466 votes.
In June 2020, shortly after the deadly riots in her city, in which a police precinct was burned down, Omar tweeted, “The “defund the police” movement, is one of reimagining the current police system to build an entity that does not violate us, while relocating funds to invest in community services. Let’s be clear, the people who now oppose this, have always opposed calls for systematic change.”

In another tweet on June 5, 2020, Omar declared, “The Minneapolis Police Department has proven themselves beyond reform. It’s time to disband them and reimagine public safety in Minneapolis.”

Omar repeatedly claimed that the police department is “rotten to the root.”
“You can’t really reform a department that is rotten to the root. What you can do is rebuild,” Rep. Ilhan Omar explains her calls to defund the police departments. “No one is saying crimes will not be investigated.” #CNNSOTU pic.twitter.com/t3q10iJv3C

Fox News shared a video compilation of multiple Democrats, including Omar, calling to defund the police over the past two years.
