An attack ad released by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign used AI-generated images of former President Donald Trump hugging Dr. Anthony Fauci.
AFP reported Wednesday that three of the images in the 44-second attack ad are fakes.
Those images show Trump hugging and kissing Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who became synonymous with the U.S.’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the ad, Trump is blasted for refusing to fire Fauci, which runs contrary to his image as a mogul who happily and easily fired people as a reality star on The Apprentice.
The ad includes audio of Trump explaining why Fauci wasn’t fired, while a collage of six images of the two men is displayed. Three of those images are real, but three are deep fakes.
“This video contains real imagery interspersed with AI-generated imagery of Trump hugging and kissing Dr. Anthony Fauci without noting they are fake,” Twitter’s fact checkers informed users.
“In addition, Trump could not directly fire Dr. Fauci without the move going through an administrative judge or a late EO.”

Hey @elonmusk
How come Trump supporters get community noted for posting facts about @RonDeSantis but then his campaign is allowed to post doctored AI generated images on Trump embracing Fauci and nothing happens?
Just seems a bit biased. #Trump2024 https://t.co/TTZeEdL6Jg
