Facebook’s Oversight Board is expected to announce its decision on whether to indefinitely suspend former President Trump from Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday.

The board in January accepted a case referral from Facebook to examine the ban, as well as to provide policy recommendations on suspensions when the user is a political leader.

The article goes on to state the following:

Facebook moved to block Trump “indefinitely” after the Jan. 6 riot in the U.S. Capitol, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg saying that they “believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.”

In a Twitter post on Monday, the Oversight Board wrote, “The Oversight Board will announce its decision on the case concerning former US President Trump on its website at on May 5, 2021 at approximately 9:00 a.m. EDT.”

In another tweet, the Board wrote, “Ahead of our announcement on the Trump suspension case, a reminder of how the Oversight Board makes decisions:”

  • The Oversight Board selects cases that affect many users, are of critical importance to public discourse, and/or raise important questions about Facebook’s policies.
  • A diverse five-member panel convenes to deliberate the case. Members of the panel are randomly chosen. Once a case is assigned to a panel, it should be decided by the Oversight Board and implemented by Facebook within 9 days unless there are exceptional circumstances.
  • The panel looks at whether content violates Facebook’s Community Standards and values, and international human rights standards.
  • The panel considers information from the user, Facebook, outside experts, and public comments to reach a draft decision.
  • The draft decision is circulated to all Oversight Board Members for review. A majority must sign off for a decision to be published.
  • The decision is published on our website. Facebook must implement decisions within seven days, and respond publicly to recommendations within 30 days.
