Rugby’s international governing body on Monday banned transgender athletes from competing, making it the latest sports body in recent weeks to restrict them from participating.

The International Rugby League, which sets the rules for the sport in matches around the world and oversees the Rugby League World Cup, said in a statement that male-to-female rugby players will not be permitted to play in sanctioned women’s matches before further research is conducted.

The article goes on to state the following:

“It is the IRL’s responsibility to balance the individual’s right to participate … against perceived risk to other participants,” the league said.

This comes after the International Swimming Federation announced on Sunday that it will restrict transgender athletes from competing in women’s events. The only exception is for individuals who transitioned before the age of 12.

  1. It’s time for track and field to ban female transgendered. Biological females should not have to compete with post puberty transgendered females.

  2. If transitioned before the age of 12???? Is this going to cause an explosion of young kids to have surgery? Wouldn’t it be easier to just create a separate category? I applaud the effort to protect biological female sports, however I feel it will also cause young children, and yes 12 year olds are children, to get a surgery they may regret. I get the reason behind that age choice, I just think creating a separate category for transgenders to compete is the better option.
