New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) has registered to become licensed as a substitute teacher as part of a push to address COVID-19-related staffing shortages at schools and child care centers.

The governor does not have prior experience in education but expects to be placed as a substitute in an elementary school next week, according to CNN.

The article goes on to state the following:

“There aren’t any other options,” the governor said, asking for the public’s help to register more substitute teachers, CNN reported.

Grisham’s press secretary Nora Sackett also told CNN, “This work will not require the Lt. Gov. to act as governor.”

According to CNN, Grisham is joined by 50 National Guard and 50 state employees that have signed up for the “Supporting Teachers and Families” initiative that was announced last week.

Grisham tweeted Sunday, “New Mexico is doing everything in our power to support educators, students, and families as schools face staffing challenges. Keeping kids in school safely is critical – for their learning, for their nutrition, and for their overall wellbeing.”

“Our schools are a critical source of stability for kids – we know they learn better in the classroom and thrive among their peers. Today we announced our Supporting Teachers and Families initiative, supporting school & child care staffing staffing and keeping school doors open.”

“State employee and National Guard members will support school districts and help fill staffing gaps caused by COVID-19 by volunteering to be licensed as substitute teachers and child care workers, enabling schools to avoid the disruptive process of switching to remote learning. STAF will support students by keeping them safely in class and support parents by ensuring schools stay open, preventing families from juggling work and child care when schools and child care centers are faced with staffing challenges.”
