An Idaho hospital will stop labor and delivery services, citing doctor shortages and the “political climate,” the hospital announced Friday.
“Highly respected, talented physicians are leaving. Recruiting replacements will be extraordinarily difficult,” Bonner General Health, located in the city of Sandpoint, said in a news release.
Pregnant women who utilized Bonner General, a 25-bed hospital, will now have to drive to hospitals or birthing centers in Coeur d’Alene or Spokane to give birth.
At Bonner General, 265 babies were delivered and less than 10 pediatric patients were admitted in 2022.
Rural hospitals have faced additional challenges in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade. Many struggle to keep their facilities fully staffed and running.
States with strict abortion laws are finding that hospitals risk losing staff or doctors to other regions. Following Indiana’s decision to restrict abortion, the Indiana Hospital Association said the state is “creating an atmosphere that will be perceived as antagonistic to physicians.”
In Idaho, one of the states with the most restrictive abortion bans, physicians argue they are being forced to choose whether to break state or federal law.
In a statement, Bonner General said, “The Idaho Legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care. Consequences for Idaho Physicians providing the standard of care may include civil litigation and criminal prosecution, leading to jail time or fines.”
Ford Elsaesser, Bonner General Health’s Board President, said, “We have made every effort to avoid eliminating these services. We hoped to be the exception, but our challenges are impossible to overcome now.”

If the obstetricians only focused on a child’s life and not abortion, why would there be a problem?

Hospitals face hardship because of care they are forced to provide to people that will never be paying for the care they received! Border town hospitals are being destroyed and bankrupt by illegal immigrants who overwhelm hospitals daily. The same is true across the country! And homeless people are a drain as well.
Our founding fathers could never have anticipated a society of such IRRESPONSIBLE and ENTITLED people!

I am from rural in NM. Our doctors are leaving NM because it is a blue state. So we go to doctors in TX.
This is unreal. I had a Catholic doctor deliver my baby and he was pro life . A true catholic who did not believe in preventing life. Biden is no Catholic and we are being led in Washington DC by the Devil. A so called friend told me as a kid the devil lived under my house. I was scared to lay on the floor because he would get me with his pitchfork. True story.
He has left Charlotte North Carolina and is now living in Washington DC!
