House lawmakers on Wednesday voted to approve legislation crafted by two members of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack committee that seeks to protect elections from interference by lawmakers.

The Presidential Election Reform Act reaffirms that the vice president’s role in certifying the election is purely ceremonial, and drastically increases the number of lawmakers in each chamber needed to object to the certification of electors from one member to one-third of the body.

It also targets other actions taken by former President Trump in the lead up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, making explicit the role governors play in the electoral process. The bill takes aim at the faux election certificates crafted by Trump’s team and the pressure campaign in various states to replace their electors with those who would vote for then-President Trump.

The bill passed in a 229-203 vote.

The following nine Republicans joined all Democrats present in supporting the measure: Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.), Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), Fred Upton (Mich.), Jaime Herrera Beutler (Wash.), Peter Meijer (Mich.), Tom Rice (S.C.), John Katko (N.Y.), Anthony Gonzalez (Ohio) and Chris Jacobs (N.Y.).

  1. The Constitution clearly delegates the organization of elections to the state legislatures. It gives no role to state governors. Congress must go through the constitutionally prescribed amendment process in order to change the Constitution. Statutes aiming to change the Constitution are constitutionally deficient. Like the Electoral Count Act of 1877, this new Electoral Count Reform Act is patently unconstitutional. I call on the PA legislature to void its application in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and call on all other state legislatures to do the same.

  2. It has to pass the Senate. Let’s watch who votes for this. Liz Cheney and Adam Kissinger will be gone soon. That will be a great day!

  3. So the Dems lied again right?! They said the VP does not have the power to over turn an election and send it back to the state electors. But yet is trying to pass a law to keep him from over turning the election. LIES LIES LIES!!!!! They all need to be held accountable NOW!!!!

  4. Unconstitutional and cant stand. Nothing but a political stunt. It will be challenged no doubt. They have to pass it with a super majority and must be ratified by 2/3 of the states. This whole sham of J6 committee and its political posturing.

  5. This requires a Convention of States to be ratified since changes Stayes Control of election laws, otherwise it’s a direct Violation of the Constitution

  6. State legislatures need to reject this bill if it pssses the senate. This administration is trying to change the laws unconstitutionally to keep Trump from running snd:or winning in 3024 if he decides to run. Hopefully it won’t pass the Senate.

  7. All Democratic or Democratic wannabe’s trying to push a bill to upend elections. Really, as in do what I am telling you and shut up about it! Wanta be in charge maybe…..
