A Kansas state lawmaker said she isn’t thrilled about having to share a restroom with her “huge” transgender Democratic colleague.

Rep. Cheryl Helmer made her stance known in an April 23 email to University of Kansas graduate student Brenan Riffel, who described themselves as trans-feminine, saying “personally I do not appreciate the huge transgender female who is now in our restrooms in the Capitol,” The Washington Times reported.

The article goes on to state the following:

Helmer was referring to Rep. Stephanie Byers, the state’s first elected transgender lawmaker.

Republican House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr. criticized Helner, saying, “it’s unfortunate those words were said.”

State Democrats and LGBTQ activists are voicing their outrage:

The ACLU is also slamming the conservative lawmaker over her remarks:

BREAKING: An email from Rep. Cheryl Helmer has gone public; the official spread misinformation and used hateful language referring to trans people and Rep. Stephaine Byers specifically.

This exposes the lie around anti-trans legislation like SB 160; it was always about hate.

As the legislature prepares to overturn the governor’s veto on the trans sports bill, this exchange highlights what advocates have always known: this bill is about transphobia, plain and simple.

Helmer sent the hateful email on April 23 from her official legislative address. She was emailing a KU grad student who identifies as transfeminine.

In the email, Helmer appears to personally attack her colleague Stephanie Byers, the state’s first openly-trans legislator.

It’s clear that the slew of bills attacking trans kids in the classroom and on the playground were never about whatever concocted lies and thinly veiled hate we were asked to believe. It has and always will be about bullying and targeting a small group for political points.

We need our people, communities, and state to see the hurtfulness in these lies.

But more urgently, we need our legislators to see the prejudice in these bills and vote them down. #ksleg, do what’s right. Stand up for our children by shutting down these hateful bills.

  1. What woman wants her private bathroom space invaded by a man, even one pretending to be a woman? Glad things are hitting home for these Democrats. Like when the IL state rep was carjacked. They are seeing first hand these “woke” policies are a failure.

  2. Give the transgenders their own bathroom if your going to support them. Then they can’t rape women whenever they decide for a day they are one!!

  3. I agree. NO biological male should ever be allowed to use the women’s bathroom, regardless of how he currently identifies himself. He’s STILL a man in the women’s bathroom.

I wouldn’t like it either, and I applaud Rep. Helmer’s standing up for Women’s Rights.

There’s NO reason we women should just “suck it up” and be uncomfortable and silent about sharing a bathroom with a biological male.

  4. These small groups attack people and blow it up in the media to make them sound bigger than they are, it’s time to start fighting back and support this women for not wanting a man in our bathrooms, I don’t care what they identify as they still have male parts and don’t belong in our restrooms. #supportRepHelmer

  5. Stop the bullying/indoctrinating ideology of individuals that know and believe in the truth and facts. Leave children out of it. Rep. Helmer voiced how she felt using the women’s restroom with Rep. Byers.
Rep. Byers recognizes, feels, identifies, transforms, dresses-up, like a woman. TRUTH, Rep. Byers is a man. In America, you do you and I’ll do me. Free speech. Free thought. Freedom. Stop whining.

  6. Let’s face it. Transgenders have a mental problem. I don’t want to share bathroom space with someone who has a mental problem. It’s a “personal” issue. Would any of these sickos want their daughter forced to share her bathroom with. Transgender?

  7. What’s next , urinals in women’s restrooms? What woman wants to walk into a restroom seeing a man pee? Separate restroom is the answer. It has nothing to do with hate or ignorance. Biological women’s rights are being slowly eroded to appease a small minority. Does this person still have male plumbing? The only safe answer is separate restrooms.

  8. They should have their own bathroom! Some people might happen to believe differently & not be able to accept relating a biological born man as a woman. To settle disputes & make life easier for everyone, why can’t they have their own private space?

  9. How in the hell did that thing get elected in the first place. That is the sad part. Helmer has a right to her god given space and her opinion.

  10. Let’s be honest trans are simply another new name for queen or gay or drag queens it’s nothing new it’s just they are now trying to pervade the schools with this crap. The nonprofits saw their money running out and jumped on a new bandwagon. Democrats are filthy evil pos who many higher level have always been perverted aholes. Just need to stand up and say nope call it what it is your queer that’s all but you still don’t get in girls bathrooms.

  11. I’d like to see the actual email she sent. It sounds like she was discussing this one instance that related directly to her. She’s allowed not to want to share a bathroom with a man. It doesn’t mean she hates all lgbtq people. It used to be if you were trans, you wanted to “pass” as the gender you dressed as you wanted to be seen as either a man or woman. Now though it seems a small but very loud group wants everyone to know they’re trans or fluid etc. I seriously don’t think the majority of lgbt people subscribe to all of this, they want to just live their lives like most everyone else. Would be interesting to hear their stance on this.
