A man has died after being crushed by a pop-up urinal in London’s busy West End.

The tragedy occurred shortly after 1 p.m. local time Friday outside the Palace Theatre, currently home to the popular production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

The victim was thought to be performing below-ground maintenance on the hydraulic public urinal when he was crushed.

Efforts to rescue him from the urinal went on for almost two hours, though he did not survive.

This model of hydraulic urinal, which is designed to stop public urination, is stored beneath the pavement during the day and lifted up to street level at night.

“We’re sorry to have to update that, despite the efforts of emergency services, the man who was critically injured in Cambridge Circus was pronounced dead at the scene,” The Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Twitter. “His next of kin have been informed. Cordons remain in place at the location.”
