Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin reportedly said Thursday that he would back the Hyde Amendment, which bans the use of federal funds for abortions.

“I’m going to support Hyde in every way possible,” the senator reportedly told Bloomberg reporter Alex Ruoff.

The article goes on to state the following:

President Joe Biden has repeatedly promised to repeal the Hyde Amendment, and his assurances are backed by Democratic leadership and pro-abortion advocates pushing to axe the amendment from acts of Congress.

The Daily Caller notes that in March, Manchin explained that he agreed to vote to confirm pro-abortion Xavier Becerra as Health and Human Services secretary because “He committed to me that he will uphold the law in regards to the Hyde Amendment.”

Bloomberg reporter Jack Fitzpatrick shared the following on Manchin’s latest promise in a series of Twitter posts:

NEWS: @Sen_JoeManchin tells @Alexruoff he’ll demand that the Hyde amendment stay in spending bills. “I’m going to support Hyde in every way possible.”

Manchin’s stance would likely block a spending bill in committee if it doesn’t include the ban on federal funds for abortion except in the case of rape, incest and to save the life of the woman. Senate Appropriations Committee is evenly divided between D’s and R’s.

Democrats’ plan to push a spending bill without Hyde was likely doomed because of the Senate’s 60-vote threshold. But this is significant because Manchin is on the Appropriations Committee (and the HHS subcommittee) and could block it before it even gets to the floor.

  1. Maybe they need to step in line with him. They have no clue that even democrats are going to turn on them because they feel like the party as left them. I see them all over YouTube talking about wanting to change parties.

  2. Senator Manchin come on over to the Republican party , you’ll feel more at home, plus Schumer will no longer control the Senate with 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats Win-win all around.
