Marvel Comics is introducing two new transgender mutant superheroes – and their genetically engineered flying turtle – next month in “Marvel Voices: Pride #1,” set to be released June 22.

Shela Sexton, also known as Escapade, will make her debut in the Marvel Universe alongside her best friend and fellow transgender mutant hero Morgan Red in a “high-flying, yet intensely personal mission,” Marvel announced this week. The pair will be joined by Hibbert, a genetically modified flying turtle that the duo “liberated” from a laboratory.

The article goes on to state the following:

In an interview with Marvel, Escapade co-creator Charlie Jane Anders described Shela, whose powers allow her to switch locations and bodies with other people, as a “cool weirdo” with a “profound loyalty to her friends.”

Anders told Marvel, “I really felt like ‘chosen family’ was an important thing to foreground here. Plus, I wanted Shela to have a really strong relationship that she could be anchored to. I spent a lot of time thinking about Morgan, and how they and Shela had grown up together. I eventually arrived at the thing where Morgan was there for Shela when she was first transitioning, and the two of them kind of supported each other through their transitions when they were kids.”

Anders continued, “It was really important to me to have a whole community of trans mutants in this comic – not just Shela and Morgan, but others. I wanted it to be super clear that being a mutant is not a metaphor for being trans, and vice versa.”

“I think that Shela has experienced some rejection because of her transness, but she’s also found an amazing community that supports her and lifts her up, and this has changed how she thinks about being a hero for sure,” Anders told Marvel.

Anders added, “She wants to be there for everybody who’s been left behind, and she wants to help people feel like they can belong and be seen and loved. That was something I really hope everyone reading this comic, especially young trans people, take away from it.”

Charlie Jane tweeted Thursday, “Now it can be told!!!! I have created a brand new superhero for @Marvel (along with her best friend!) Meet Shela Sexton, aka Escapade. She’s trans, and she’s also a mutant. We’ll meet her in the Pride issue, and then see more of her in New Mutants this fall. Shela is a thief and a trickster, who uses gadgets to pull off her heists. She doesn’t like to rely on her mutant power, for reasons that will become obvious once you’ve read the story. She identifies as a supervillain — but a supervillain who only helps people.”

“Here she is flying across the ocean using her flying gloves and boots! Her amazing costume was designed by @ten_bandits and @RoStein404 , who did the art. (Colors by the wonderful @TBonvillain!) @MightyBrunstad suggested the jumpsuit. Anita Okoye came up with the name Escapade. One thing that was very important to me in co-creating this character: being a mutant is not a metaphor for being trans, and vice versa. These are just two aspects of her identity that sometimes intersect. Also: neither of those things defines her! She is a complete person!”

“I came up with SO MUCH backstory for Shela, most of which hasn’t been seen yet. I know her parents’ entire life stories! Shela is fun to write because she’s just learning — we see her have her first ever fight with a superpowered person, and she’s excited but also overwhelmed. She’s very funny and quippy, but also wears her heart on her sleeve. And she is very suspicious of authority, including people like Professor X and Magneto.”

  1. Seriously, why??? I don’t understand from a marketing view how this will work for them. The majority of Americans does not want this and do not want their kids watching this shit. There is such a small audience that is trans so why is Marvel catering to that group? Go woke go broke. #ripmarvel

  2. The FREAKS now have a superhero, what a sad society that we live in when being a freak is now mainstream instead of being a circus sideshow act.
Either way I will not be seeing that movie ever or anything from Disney from now on.
God made man and woman period.
