Republican Max Miller is poised to ride an endorsement from Donald Trump to victory over Rep. Anthony Gonzalez in a GOP primary in Ohio, a contest unfolding as a clear test of the former president’s influence with grassroots conservatives.
Miller, a 32-year-old former Trump White House aide, was endorsed by the former president soon after announcing for the Cleveland-area 16th Congressional District. Trump was intent on getting revenge on Gonzalez, a second-term congressman among the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach him in the waning days of his administration for allegedly inciting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The article goes on to state the following:
Trump’s swift endorsement of Miller has, so far, kept other Republicans who might want to challenge Gonzalez, 36, out of the race. Party insiders are skeptical that will change, setting up a one-on-one contest between pro-Trump and anti-Trump candidates on track to reveal how much punch the former president has in GOP primaries post-White House.
One high-ranking Ohio Republican summed it up with this: “Gonzalez is on life support.”
Miller, who is Jewish, comes from a wealthy Ohio family with deep roots in the state, the report explained. He is able to self-finance his campaign, and also raised approximately $500,000 in the four weeks after launching his campaign.
Trump endorsed Miller in February, writing, “Max Miller is a wonderful person who did a great job at the White House and will be a fantastic Congressman. He is a Marine Veteran, a son of Ohio, and a true PATRIOT.”
Trump added, “Current Rep. Anthony Gonzalez should not be representing the people of the 16th district because he does not represent their interest or their heart. Max Miller has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
I am honored to be endorsed by President Donald J. Trump as I begin my campaign for Congress.
I will never back down and will never betray my constituents.

Miller tweeted earlier this week, “Being a champion for Israel means being a champion for peace, a champion for trade normalization, and a champion for democracy. That’s what President Trump’s America First agenda achieved and what I will fight to restore.”

Miller blasted Gonzalez on Thursday, tweeting, “Yesterday my RINO opponent joined every Democrat in support of the partisan Pelosi Commission. Anthony Gonzalez has abandoned our district, he’s not coming back. I look forward to earning the support of this district and fighting to advance President Trump’s America First agenda.”

Miller also shared a photo mocking Gonzalez, as he was pictured recently with two other anti-Trump Republicans, Rep. Liz Cheney and Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, who recently announced he will not be running for re-election.
Duncan released a statement on Monday announcing that he will not be running for re-election, but said he will be transitioning a majority of his political energy “toward helping to build out an organization called GOP 2.0 on a national level.” He said the organization “will focus on healing and rebuilding a Republican Party that is damaged but not destroyed through a strategy called P.E.T. Project.”
According to tweets posted by Duncan, Cheney and Gonzalez are involved in his GOP 2.0 protect.
“Birds of a feather….” Miller quipped in mockery.
