Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued a statement in defense of Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, a political ally who is facing a federal investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct.

The statement came after The New York Times reported — and a source told Fox News — that Gaetz once asked Trump White House aides for a preemptive pardon at the end of his term.

The article goes on to state the following:

But in a statement Wednesday, Trump said Gaetz never asked him directly: “Congressman Matt Gaetz has never asked me for a pardon,” Trump said. “It must also be remembered that he has totally denied the accusations against him.”

In a report published Tuesday night, the NY Times noted that Gaetz was one of Trump’s most vocal allies during his presidency, then wrote the following:

In the final weeks of Mr. Trump’s term, Mr. Gaetz sought something in return. He privately asked the White House for blanket pre-emptive pardons for himself and unidentified congressional allies for any crimes they may have committed, according to two people told of the discussions.

Around that time, Mr. Gaetz was also publicly calling for broad pardons from Mr. Trump to thwart what he termed the “bloodlust” of their political opponents. But Justice Department investigators had begun questioning Mr. Gaetz’s associates about his conduct, including whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old that violated sex trafficking laws, in an inquiry that grew out of the case of an indicted associate in Florida.

Gaetz has emphatically denied ever having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old.

The New York Times said their story was based on interviews with “four people briefed on the exchanges about his pardon request and other Trump confidants,” but did not name any sources.

MSNBC legal analyst Glenn Kirschner pushed the story in a news report on Wednesday:

CNN anchor Jake Tapper also pushed the story on Wednesday, although he did share Trump’s statement saying Gaetz had never asked him for a pardon:

CNN’s Chris Cuomo also covered the New York Times’ report on Tuesday night, admitting that CNN hadn’t confirmed the story yet.

CNN host Don Lemon covered the report on Tuesday night also:

MSNBC host Chris Hayes highlighted the claim that Gaetz had asked for a pardon as well:

  1. The NYT is clawing for survival. Their loss in court this week and the revelation that they primarily broadcast opinion not fact is killing them. They will make up any story about conservatives they possibly can.

They have been a fraud for many years. That concern has now been validated.

  2. What Ilove about Gaetz is he is a fighter. The Deep State is gunning for him and makes a formidable foe. I hope he gets through this and helps to bring the roof down around their heads!
