A hero dog credited with defending her female owner from a mountain lion attack in Northern California has died, the woman said Wednesday.

Eva, a 2.5-year-old Belgian Malinois, began having seizures last weekend at her home, Erin Wilson, 24, told the Sacramento Bee. Her condition worsened from there, despite being taken to an animal hospital at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

The article goes on to state the following:

Wilson was walking with Eva along the Trinity River last month when a mountain lion lunged at her and scratched her shoulder.

The dog attacked the lion in order to save Wilson, and ended up with wounds to her head, including fractures to her skull.

Wilson has been sharing updates on her Instagram page, and this week shared the sad news that her beloved dog was not expected to recover, then announced that Eva had died.

On Tuesday, Wilson announced, “I have an update. When i brought Eva to UC Davis, she was able to walk/run, wag her tail, give everyone her usual love and affection with some wobbliness. Unfortunately overnight she had more seizures, and her mentation deteriorated. As of just a few hours ago she is comatose. There is no neurological response to pain or stimuli. We are getting an MRI done to see if there could be a lesion, hematoma, or something else that is causing this. Her prognosis is not good. There is a chance she could pass at anytime. I don’t know what else to say right now.”

In an emotional post on Wednesday, Wilson wrote, “We said goodbye at 9:20 this morning. There were no changes to her condition overnight. Goodbye my beautiful sweet girl. You are my world, my light, my best friend. The world is a much darker place. Fuck you universe.”

On Thursday, Wilson shared a photo and wrote, “This world is not fair. It is cruel. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Our baby is gone and now we have no one come and be held with us. We don’t have our kisses. I don’t have my girls incredibly soft fur. She was so delicate. So dainty. She would carefully pick her way to the pillows and flop onto me to get love from both of us.”
