A House Democrat announced legislation that would deny former President Donald Trump the speaker’s gavel.
Rep. Brendan Boyle’s offering would “require that only elected Members or Delegates be eligible to serve as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.” As it stands now, the U.S. Constitution does not require the speaker of the House to be a member of Congress, though every speaker in U.S. history has been an elected member.
The article goes on to state the following:
“The Speaker of the U.S. House is second in the United States presidential line of succession. That Donald Trump’s name would even be tossed around as a potential speaker in the people’s house should serve as an alarm bell that our current requirements need to be amended in the name of protecting our nation and our democracy,” Boyle said. “As such, our laws should mandate that the Speaker be a member of the U.S. House.”
“This legislation would establish that mandate in very clear and direct language, and it would serve as a check against those who would seek to undermine and derogate the authority and responsibilities of the Speaker’s office,” Boyle added.

Rumors have swirled in the past few months that Trump could end up being Speaker of the House, and Rep. Matt Gaetz told a crowd on July 3, “My commitment to you is that my vote for the U.S. House of Representatives will go to Donald J. Trump.”
However, Trump has brushed off the suggestion. When asked about the possibility in one interview, he just said it was “very interesting.”
In a June interview, Trump said he had heard talk about him being Speaker, but added, “It’s nothing I’ve ever considered.”

The media pounced on a comment made by GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy last month, claiming McCarthy said Trump “wants to be speaker.” McCarthy pushed back, noting the media had misinterpreted his words, as he actually said, “He tells me he wants me speaker, and I think he should be president.”
