Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky headed to Staten Island University Hospital on Monday to visit his country’s wounded soldiers after he landed in the Big Apple for this week’s United Nations General Assembly.

Zelensky thanked Ukrainian fighters receiving treatment at the hospital and even helped one soldier out of his wheelchair and to his feet as the two took a photo together.

During his visit, Zelensky handed out commendations to the injured soldiers, some confined to wheelchairs and others with prosthetic limbs. He also toured the facility.

According to the report, 18 Ukrainian soldiers have received treatment at the medical center since March.

Zelenskyy announced in a Twitter post:

Olena @ZelenskaUA and I arrived in the United States for the high-level week of the UN General Assembly and a visit to Washington, D.C. I will attend the General Assembly, SDG Summit, and Security Council meetings at the UN, as well as a number of important bilateral talks.

Ukraine will put out a concrete proposal to UN member states on how to fortify the principle of territorial integrity and improve the UN’s capacity to thwart and halt aggression.

In Washington, D.C., I am going to meet with @POTUS Joe Biden, leaders of the U.S. Congress’ chambers and parties, military leadership, American businesses, journalists, and members of the Ukrainian community. I will thank the United States on behalf of Ukraine for its assistance in our struggle for independence and freedom.

Reporter Victoria Manna shared a video, and wrote, “BREAKING NEWS: source sends me video of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy inside Staten Island University Hospital’s north campus. Hospital says he visited doctors and honored Ukrainian soldiers being treated there.”

Zelenskyy also shared photos from his hospital visit.

“I started my visit to the U.S. with the most important thing: meeting our wounded warriors at Staten Island University Hospital. I thanked them all for their service and wished them a speedy recovery. I also thanked and awarded medical personnel and the Kind Deeds foundation,” he tweeted.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) voiced her opposition to the Ukrainian president’s visit.  She tweeted:

Zelenskyy is coming to Washington DC this week and the House is supposed to vote for the Defense bill which includes another $300 million more for Ukraine. He’s already gotten over $113 billion of Americans hard earned taxpayer dollars.

I’ve never voted to send a penny to Ukraine and I’m not voting for it this week especially with Zelenskyy in town wearing his green T-shirt acting like he’s at war while he’s telling Joe Biden what to do.

America’s only position in Ukraine should be pushing for peace, not funding a war that is killing people every single day and recking Europe’s economy.
