Former President Donald Trump paid tribute to the passing of former Sen. Bob Dole in a statement on Sunday.

Dole, 98, a Kansas Republican and a World War II hero, passed away Sunday morning.

Dole was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1960, then to the U.S. Senate in 1968, where he served until 1996.

Trump’s statement reads as follows:

Bob Dole was an American war hero and true patriot for our Nation. He served the Great State of Kansas with honor and the Republican Party was made stronger by his service.

Our Nation mourns his passing, and our prayers are with Elizabeth and his wonderful family.

In 2018, then-President Trump honored Dole in a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony.
