President Donald J. Trump issued a statement after a California high school student opened fire on his classmates Thursday.

A Saugus High School student, identified by neighbors and law enforcement sources as Nathaniel Berhow, is accused of shooting five people, killing two, before turning the gun on himself, on his 16th birthday.

“We continue to monitor the terrible events at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, California through our ongoing communications with Local, State, and Federal Authorities,” Trump tweeted Thursday evening. “We send our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those tragically lost, and we pray for the speedy recovery of the wounded.”

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department received a call at 7:38 a.m. Thursday and minutes later arrived at the Santa Clarita school to find six students with gunshot wounds, including the suspect,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“They were all transported to a hospital, where a 16-year-old female student and a 14-year-old male student died,” the LA Times continued.

The suspect is currently hospitalized in “grave condition,” according to Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
