Winsome Sears delivered a patriotic speech as she claimed victory in her race to become the first woman and woman of color to be elected Virginia’s lieutenant governor.

“I’m telling you that what you are looking at is the American dream,” Sears said during her victory speech.

The article goes on to state the following:

“When I joined the Marine Corps, I was still a Jamaican. But this country had done so much for me, I was willing, willing, to die for this country,” Sears said during her victory speech early Wednesday morning.

The New York Times officially confirmed Sears as the winner Wednesday morning, with 50.8% of the vote, compared to 49.2% for her Democrat opponent, Hala Ayala.

Sears, 57, a Jamaican immigrant who came to the U.S. as a child, is a former US Marine, a former vice president of the Virginia State Board of Education, and a former director of a Salvation Army women’s homeless shelter.

She also owns an appliance and plumbing repair store in Virginia, and previously served as vice president of the Virginia Board of Education, the report states.

In her victory speech early Wednesday morning, Sears quipped, “In case you haven’t noticed, I am Black. And I have been Black all my life, but that’s not what this is about.”

“What we are going to do now is be about the business of the Commonwealth,” she continued. “We have things to tend to. We are going to fully fund our historically Black colleges and universities. We’re going to have safer neighborhoods, safer communities, and our children are going to get a good education.”

In a poke against Kamala Harris, Sears posted a photo-shopped picture of herself, using the same background as the photo of Harris when she touted the Biden-Harris victory in November. Harris had said to Biden, “We did it, Joe.”

Sears captioned her photo, “We did it, Glenn.”

Sears was interviewed by Fox News Wednesday morning. Watch the interview below:

Free Beacon editor Brent Scher asked last week, “Shouldn’t media be all over a black woman who immigrated from Jamaica, served in the Marines, has a Masters degree, ran a homeless women’s shelter, raised 3 kids, and is now running to be the highest ranking minority woman gov’t official in Virginia history?”
