Nina Jankowicz, who had been appointed by the Department of Homeland Security to oversee a newly-launched “Disinformation Governance Board,” officially resigned on Wednesday, after the news broke that the DHS has put the whole program on “pause.”

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas prompted outrage from conservatives last month when he announced the launch of the ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ to combat ‘disinformation’ in the 2022 midterms.

The announcement came just days after Elon Musk announced he had made a deal to purchase Twitter and voiced his intention to ensure free speech was honored.

The outrage had grown even more fierce when multiple embarrassing videos and social media posts surfaced showing that Jankowicz had promoted “disinformation” herself, including pushing out the false propaganda about “Russian collusion” against former President Donald Trump.

Below is Jankowicz’s resignation statement:

After six years dedicated to the study of disinformation and best practices in responding to it, I joined the Department of Homeland Security to be the executive director of the Disinformation Governance Board with the intention of supporting the Department’s important work addressing disinformation that affects the homeland. With the Board’s work paused and its future uncertain, I have decided to leave DHS to return to my work in the public sphere.

It is deeply disappointing that mischaracterizations of the Board became a distraction from the Department’s vital work, and indeed, along with recent events globally and nationally, embodies why it is necessary. I maintain my commitment to building awareness of disinformation’s threats and trust the Department will do the same.

DHS released the following statement:

The Board’s purpose and been grossly and intentionally mischaracterized; it was never about censorship or policing speech in any manner. Quite the opposite: it was designed to ensure we fulfill our mission to protect the homeland, while protecting core Constitutional rights. As its executive director, Nina Jankowicz was subjected to unjustified and vile personal attacks and physical threats.

As the Secretary has repeatedly said in Congressional hearings and media interviews, Nina is eminently qualified to do this work. We know she will continue to be a leader in this field. DHS remains committed to the important work it has done for nearly a decade to combat disinformation that threatens the homeland, including disinformation spread by smugglers and foreign nation states.”
